The cellulose inside it is perfectly good food, but it is locked up in lignin, which almost nothing can digest directly. In a forest, fungi solve this slowly by rotting the wood over months and years. Fermentation solves it fast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eHardwood sawdust is mixed with water and a carbohydrate source, then seeded with microorganisms and turned repeatedly while it heats and works. The bacteria and micro-fungi break the lignin into shorter chains and leave the cellulose intact, and the resulting material is darker, softer and considerably richer in nitrogen than the wood that went in. That nitrogen enrichment is the part that grows large larvae.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIt is worth distinguishing three things that get muddled constantly. \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/postpods.co.uk\/products\/shredded-rotten-wood\"\u003eWhite-rotted hardwood\u003c\/a\u003e is wood that fungi have degraded in place, and it keeps its structure. Kinshi is sawdust colonised by mushroom mycelium and used mainly for particular stag beetle larvae. Flake soil is the fermented option, and it is the most generally useful of the three across different animals. Keepers of prolific species tend to notice the difference in brood size first. Loose medium is a problem because larvae need to hold an open tunnel, and a tub that collapses each time they move costs them energy they should be spending on growth. Moisten to the point where a squeezed handful holds together without releasing water, and no further.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFor millipedes and isopods, mix it through rather than layering it. Somewhere around a fifth to a quarter of the total volume is a sensible starting proportion, blended into a base that also contains leaf litter and coarser rotten wood for structure. It is a biologically active material, not an inert one, and it will keep working slowly wherever you leave it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eTwo things to avoid\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eNever use softwood-based substrate for larvae. Pine, spruce and the rest carry resins with antifungal and insecticidal properties, and they are unsuitable for both the animals and the fungi they depend on. Everything here is hardwood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe other one is coco coir, which sits at the opposite end of the scale from this product. Coir holds water beautifully and contains essentially nothing a wood-feeder can use. For a springtail culture that is fine, since springtails graze surfaces rather than eating the medium. For beetle larvae and millipedes it is bulk without nutrition, and larvae fed on it do not do well. Left to a white-rot fungus, lignin and cellulose both come apart, which is what turns indigestible timber into food.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eTwo things to be straight about\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLion's mane, \u003cem\u003eHericium erinaceus\u003c\/em\u003e, is a white-rot fungus of beech and oak, so the mechanism above holds for it. It is not one of the species Japanese breeders traditionally use, which are the oyster mushrooms and turkey tail, so treat this as the same mechanism by a different fungus. Second, and more practically, this material is supplied dried and a kinshi bottle never is. The Japanese product is a live, refrigerated block with a shelf life measured in months, and the larvae are reared inside it. This is a food you add, not a medium you rear in, and any listing that tells you otherwise about dried material is overselling it. Drying does not spend it, because the fungal protein is still there and the freeze-dried work above shows dead mycelium still feeds larvae. What is gone is the living, spreading culture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFor larvae, rehydrate until it holds together when squeezed without dripping, and work it into the rearing substrate or lay it on the surface where they will find it, refreshing as it goes. For wood-eating isopods and millipedes, break it into pieces and mix it through or scatter it over the surface, then leave them to work at it in their own time. There is very little daily work involved: check the moisture, change the medium when it is spent, wait.
