You get the full transformation: a plain white grub that works quietly through rotten wood for months and then emerges as one of the most extravagantly coloured beetles on the planet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eThe animal\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003ePhalacrognathus muelleri\u003c\/em\u003e was named by Sir William Macleay in 1885 in honour of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, the Victorian government botanist. It is the only species in its genus and it comes from the rainforests of northern Queensland and New Guinea, with two recognised subspecies split between those two ranges. Rear them separately, because larvae housed together will damage each other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eTimeline from grub to beetle\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLarvae pass through three instars, growing from something barely visible to a plump white grub with an orange head capsule. Under room-temperature rearing, egg to emerged adult typically runs four to eight months, with the pupal stage taking around a month of that. Larger, slower-grown larvae generally produce larger adults, so there is little to gain from rushing them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOnce an adult emerges it needs roughly three months of maturation before it is ready to breed, and it will often stay hidden in its chamber during that period. Resist the urge to dig it out. They take beetle jelly or soft fruit, and they are docile enough to handle gently despite the impressive mandibles. There is very little daily work involved: check the moisture, change the medium when it is spent, wait.
