Can Isopods Eat Tomatoes?

Tomatoes come up regularly as a potential isopod food because they're available in most kitchens and technically classified as fruits. But the realistic answer is: yes, technically isopods can eat them, but they're not recommended, and most experienced UK keepers avoid tomatoes. This article covers why.

The Short Version

Tomatoes have several practical issues that make them unsuitable for routine isopod feeding:

  • Acidic - pH 4.0-4.5 can disrupt substrate chemistry over time
  • Decompose rapidly in humid enclosures, attracting mould and pests
  • High sugar content attracts fruit flies, mites, and other pests
  • Plant parts toxic - leaves, stems, vines contain solanine/tomatine
  • Better alternatives readily available - most other vegetables work better

Tiny amounts of ripe tomato flesh occasionally won't harm a colony, but as a routine food choice tomatoes don't earn their place.

The Acidity Issue

Tomatoes are notably acidic compared to most isopod foods. While occasional small portions of acidic foods don't significantly affect well-buffered established substrates, regular tomato feeding can:

  • Shift substrate pH downward over time
  • Disrupt the microbial community isopods rely on
  • Stress species that prefer neutral-to-alkaline conditions (Cubaris, Mediterranean Armadillidium)
  • Interfere with calcium availability from cuttlebone

For tropical Cubaris from limestone caves, the acidity is particularly counterproductive - their natural environment is alkaline limestone-rich, and tomatoes work against that.

The Mould Problem

Tomato flesh decomposes quickly in 22-26°C humid enclosures. Within 24-48 hours:

  • Tomato pieces become soft, slimy, and mould-covered
  • Sugar content attracts fruit flies and mites
  • Decomposing flesh can spread mould to surrounding substrate
  • Mites established from tomato food are difficult to eliminate

Other vegetables (courgette, carrot, sweet potato) decompose much more slowly and don't carry the same pest attraction.

The Plant Parts Are Toxic

An important point not always made clear: the entire tomato plant - leaves, stems, vines - contains solanine and tomatine, which are toxic alkaloids. Concentrations are MUCH higher in green plant parts than in ripe fruit.

  • Ripe fruit: minimal solanine, generally safe in small amounts
  • Unripe (green) fruit: higher solanine, avoid
  • Stems and leaves: highest solanine concentrations, never feed
  • Tomato vine cuttings: Never include in isopod enclosures

If you grow tomatoes in your garden, don't compost vine cuttings with materials destined for isopod substrate, and don't include any green plant material when offering tomato fruit.

If You're Going to Feed Tomatoes Anyway

For keepers who want to try tomatoes despite the issues:

  1. Ripe red tomatoes only - never green or unripe
  2. Small piece - thumbnail-sized at most, not a slice
  3. Remove within 24 hours - don't let it sit
  4. No skin if possible - peel reduces sugar contact with substrate
  5. Occasional only - once every few weeks at most
  6. Watch for mites - stop immediately if mite activity increases
  7. Not in premium Cubaris setups - use other fruit for valuable species

Better Alternatives

If you want to offer vegetables and fruits to your isopods, these are much better choices:

Vegetables That Work Well

  • Courgette/zucchini - mild, slow to decompose
  • Carrot (root, not tops) - excellent, lasts days in enclosure
  • Cucumber - fine, slow decomposition
  • Sweet potato - very popular, nutritious
  • Butternut squash - excellent
  • Kale, spinach in small amounts

Fruits That Work Well

  • Apple slices - the standard fruit choice
  • Pear - mild and slow to mould
  • Banana (sparingly - high sugar)
  • Melon (occasionally)
  • Berries (small amounts)

About Protein Sources

Worth correcting a few protein recommendations that circulate but aren't ideal for isopods:

The Honest Verdict

Tomatoes aren't deadly to isopods, and small amounts of ripe tomato won't crash a healthy colony. But they're not a good routine food choice - acidic, fast-rotting, pest-attracting, with toxic plant parts to be aware of.

If you have ripe tomatoes you want to use up, give a tiny piece occasionally and remove the next day. If you're choosing between feeding options, skip tomatoes in favour of courgette, carrot, sweet potato, or apple - all easier, cleaner, and equally accepted by isopods.
