Exotic Isopods: Rare and Attractive Pets to Keep - Isopods For Sale UK | PostPods

Visually Striking Isopod Species for UK Keepers

The UK isopod hobby properly includes a genuinely impressive range of visually distinctive species — from common widely-available morphs to premium cave-origin specimens. This guide covers the most popular attractive species across difficulty levels, helping new collectors choose species that match their experience and the setup they can provide.

Not all "attractive" isopods are "rare exotic" — many of the most visually striking species are properly common, accessible, and beginner-friendly. The most expensive species aren't necessarily the most attractive ones.

Beginner-Friendly Attractive Species

Powder Orange, Blue, and White (Porcellionides pruinosus)

Properly excellent starting species. Same species (P. pruinosus) in three different selectively-bred colour morphs — Orange, Blue, and White. Fast-breeding, adaptable to various setups, and properly genuinely striking when established colonies are active. The "powder" name refers to the slight metallic sheen on their cuticles.

Care: 50-70% humidity, room temperature, standard substrate, calcium provision. They work properly well in bioactive setups as cleanup crew or as breeding colonies in their own right.

Dairy Cow Isopods (Porcellio laevis "Dairy Cow")

Properly one of the most distinctive isopods in the hobby — large-bodied P. laevis morph with black-and-white spotted pattern that genuinely resembles a Friesian cow's markings. Hardy, fast-breeding, large enough to be properly impressive in display setups.

Browse our Dairy Cow Isopods. For care guidance see our species pages and the broader first isopods guide. Care: standard hardy isopod conditions, generous space for the larger body size, protein supplementation (dried shrimp, fish flakes) helps prevent moulting cannibalism.

Zebra Isopods (Armadillidium maculatum)

Properly genuinely striking with their bold black-and-white striped pattern. Like other Armadillidium they can conglobate (roll into a ball when disturbed), which adds to their charm. They're crepuscular like most isopods — most active during low-light periods, not uniquely diurnal as some sources claim.

Browse our Yellow Zebra Isopods for one of the available variants. Properly moderate-priced and accessible to most keepers.

Magic Potion Isopods (Armadillidium vulgare "Magic Potion")

Properly distinctive Spanish-bred A. vulgare morph with purple-blue colouration. Browse our Magic Potion Isopods. Care: moderate humidity, standard Mediterranean Armadillidium conditions.

Intermediate Attractive Species

Armadillo gestroi (Yellow Gestroi)

Properly important note: Armadillo gestroi is a separate genus from Armadillidium — they're not A. vulgare morphs. They're properly Sardinian/Corsican endemics with distinctive yellow-orange colouration and slightly different husbandry from Armadillidium.

Browse our A. gestroi. The white morph is also notable — see White Gestroi Zinger.

Clown Isopods (Armadillidium klugii)

Properly visually distinctive species with contrasting yellow polka dots and orange edge markings ("skirt") — earning them the "Clown" common name. Croatian/Montenegrin origin.

Browse our Clown Klugii Isopods. Care: similar to other Mediterranean Armadillidium — moderate humidity gradient, room temperature, proper calcium provision.

Tri-Colour Ardentiella (Ardentiella sp. "Tri-Colour")

Vietnamese tropical morph with three-tone colour pattern. Browse our Ardentiella collection. For detailed care see our Tri-Colour care article. Note: these were formerly called Merulanella before the March 2025 reclassification.

Premium Attractive Species (Advanced)

Rubber Ducky (Cubaris sp. "Rubber Ducky")

Properly one of the most iconic premium isopods. Thai limestone cave species with distinctive yellow-and-black pattern that resembles a rubber duck toy when curled. Browse our Rubber Ducky Isopods.

Care: tropical (22-26°C), high humidity (75-85%) with strong ventilation, calcium-rich setup, escape-proof enclosure (climbing mancae). See our Rubber Ducky care article for details.

Panda King (Cubaris sp. "Panda King")

Thai cave species with bold black-and-white pattern. Browse our Panda King Isopods. Same intermediate-to-advanced care profile as other premium Cubaris.

Pak Chong (Cubaris sp. "Pak Chong")

Thai cave morph with red-orange faces, white edge markings, and blue-grey body tones. Browse our Pak Chong Isopods.

Various Ardentiella Morphs

Properly the most visually diverse group in the premium hobby. Vietnamese tropical morphs available:

Selecting Based on Your Experience

If You're New to Isopods

Properly start with hardy species that tolerate setup mistakes:

  • Powder Orange, Blue, or White (P. pruinosus) — fast-breeding, adaptable
  • Dairy Cow (P. laevis) — hardy and visually striking
  • Zebra (A. maculatum) — distinctive without demanding conditions
  • P. scaber morphs — UK-native, properly forgiving

For comprehensive beginner guidance, see our first isopods guide.

If You Have Some Experience

Properly consider stepping up to:

  • A. gestroi (Sardinian endemic with proper Mediterranean care)
  • A. klugii (Clown Isopods — striking pattern, moderate care)
  • Spanish Armadillidium morphs — Magic Potion, Jelly Bean, similar
  • Various selectively-bred P. scaber morphs (Dalmatian, Lava, Orange, etc.)

If You're Ready for Premium Species

The cave-origin Cubaris and Vietnamese Ardentiella properly reward experienced keepers:

  • Tropical conditions consistently maintained (22-27°C, 75-85% humidity)
  • Proper escape-proofing for climbing mancae
  • Patience with slow breeding (months not weeks for visible offspring)
  • Investment in dedicated enclosures (one species per enclosure for morph preservation)

Realistic Expectations

Properly important to set realistic expectations regardless of species choice:

  • Activity levels: Most isopods are crepuscular/nocturnal — properly most visible at low-light periods. Don't expect to see them constantly active during the day
  • Personality: Isopods don't have individual personalities or character — they're properly gregarious detritivores, not interactive pets
  • Maintenance: Even "low maintenance" species need consistent food, calcium, moisture, and ventilation
  • Establishment time: All isopods need weeks-to-months to establish properly stable colonies
  • Breeding rates: Common species multiply fast; premium species multiply slowly. Choose accordingly

Setting Up for Success

Regardless of which species you choose, a few setup essentials apply universally:

  • Properly escape-proof enclosure with appropriate ventilation
  • Quality substrate with leaf litter, decaying wood, and flake soil
  • Multiple hides and cork bark for cover
  • Always-available calcium (cuttlebone)
  • Springtails as cleanup crew (essential)
  • Species-appropriate humidity and temperature

Browse our accessories collection for setup essentials. For comprehensive setup guidance, see our first isopods guide.

The Honest Take

"Rare and exotic" doesn't always mean "the best choice for you." The most visually striking species across difficulty levels offer something for every keeper — from beginners just starting out to experienced collectors looking for the next addition. Choose based on what you can properly support husbandry-wise, not just on visual appeal or scarcity.

For most new keepers, properly starting with one of the beginner-friendly attractive species (Powder isopods, Dairy Cow, Zebra) is the right approach. The premium species will still be there when you've built experience with hardier ones first.
