Best isopods for the planted terrarium

Planted terrariums can be stunning, and for those of you out there with the skills and patience to set up one, I have nothing but admiration. I know that we've moved on from sealed bottles and now there is a whole range of terrariums that are targeted towards green-fingered plant keepers, but there is still an ideal situation where the system supports itself as much as possible.

To help that along, you need some detritivores, and isopods and springtails are ideal for that role.

Clown 'Montenegro' Isopods (Armadillidium Klugii)

A wonderful species for beginners, or if your terrarium might have fluctuations in temperature. They're a slower species of isopod, quite deliberate in their journey around the terrarium, meaning that you might get more of a chance to see them doing their thing. They're unlikely to have a nibble on your plants, but it's important to provide a nutritious and varied diet to keep them well fed.

Dairy Cow Isopods (Porcellio Laevis)

These are active, have great appetites and will breed and increase the population rapidly. They have a voracious appetite, so maybe not an ideal choice for very rare plants, but they will process fallen leaves and bits of wood rapidly, keeping the surface of your terrarium looking tidy.

Dwarf White Isopods (Trichorhina Tomentosa)

A tiny soft-bodied isopod with a huge appetite, these are the perfect custodian for the smaller enclosure. All Dwarf White Isopods are female, reproducing via parthenogenesis. These are one of the best clean-up crews for planted terrariums, just make sure the humidity is in the correct range for them.

Rubber Ducky Isopods (Cubaris sp.)

If you've got a warm and humid terrarium, and the experience and knowledge to keep things stable, then you might want to consider something special, and Cubaris sp are just that. Whilst I've just put Rubber Ducky here, as this is the one that so many people fall in love with, there are a whole host of them being bred by hobbyists and collectors the world over, including us. Check out this page for more.

Springtails

One of the issues in a nice warm terrarium is that mould, fungi, and other nasty things can grow. Isopods will help, but springtails are the thing to pop in to actively eat these things that you don't want overwhelming your substrate and plants.

Planted tanks can be a lot of hard work, but isopods, and yes, springtails, can make it that bit easier.
