Fresh, hand-picked sphagnum moss responsibly sourced from the woodlands of Wales by a family-run business with over 20 years of forestry experience (with Tilhill Forestry).

This is genuine living moss — not the dried, compressed kind — so it arrives lush, springy, and naturally damp straight from the forest floor. Perfect for:

  • Bioactive vivariums and terrariums
  • Springtail cultures
  • Tarantula, scorpion and other invertebrate hides
  • Humidity pockets, moist hides and egg-laying substrates
  • Tropical and temperate enclosure decoration

Because it's fresh and wild-harvested, the moss will arrive with some natural moisture and may contain small hitchhikers such as mites, gnats or other tiny insects. Please treat the moss before adding it to your enclosure. Choose the method that best suits your setup:

1. Rinse & inspect (keeps moss alive) — Rinse thoroughly under cool dechlorinated water, gently teasing the strands apart and picking out any leaves, twigs or visible bugs. Quickest method, but the least thorough.

2. Quarantine (keeps moss alive) — After rinsing, place the moss in a sealed clear tub for 1–2 weeks, checking daily. Any unwanted critters will usually emerge and can be removed. A good middle-ground option.

3. Freezing (usually kills the moss) — Seal in a bag and freeze for 48–72 hours to kill most pests and their eggs. The moss may not survive but is still perfectly usable as substrate or decoration.

4. Heat treatment (kills the moss) — Pour boiling water over the moss, or microwave it damp for 1–2 minutes in short bursts. The most thorough sterilisation method; best when you only need the moss for moisture retention or aesthetics rather than as a living plant.

For sensitive cultures (isolated springtail/isopod colonies, delicate inverts, or anything you want pest-free with certainty), freezing or heat treatment is safest. For established bioactive setups, a thorough rinse and quarantine is usually enough.

Storage: Keep any unused moss in a loosely sealed bag in the fridge to maintain freshness and keep it alive for longer.
