Temperate Springtails (Folsomia candida)

If you have read almost any bioactive care guide, one springtail keeps turning up, and this is it. Folsomia candida, sold across the hobby as the temperate or standard white springtail, is the default cleanup culture behind most isopod and vivarium setups. When a listing tells you to add springtails, this is almost always the species it means, and the one I reach for first.

These are small animals, roughly 1 to 3 mm long, white to cream and unpigmented, and they belong to the springtail class Collembola rather than to the insects. They have no working eyes, and they move with a flick of the furcula, a spring-loaded organ folded under the body that launches them several times their own length when disturbed. The species is cosmopolitan, turning up in soils across the world, which is why it settles so readily into a British home.

Their role in a setup is microscopic housekeeping. They graze on mould, fungi, bacterial films and decaying matter, clearing the spoilage that gathers around fresh food and protein before it can take hold. Isopods handle the leaf litter and larger debris; springtails work the scale beneath that, and the two together keep a bioactive enclosure balanced. Keeping a culture going asks very little. They want a moist substrate kept like a wrung-out sponge, whether coco coir or a soil-based mix with sphagnum, and they prefer low ventilation so the air stays humid, around 50 to 70%. A tub or jar with a snug lid is plenty; a few mesh-covered holes, or a brief lift of the lid at feeding, gives the air exchange they need.

Temperature is where this species earns its temperate name. It stays active and prolific from about 18 to 27°C and shrugs off the cooler end, so an unheated room suits it year round, which sets it apart from the warmth-loving tropical whites and pinks that sulk below room temperature. Feeding is a pinch now and then rather than a routine. A little baker's yeast dusted on the surface once or twice a week grows the mould they graze and is eaten directly too, and a sliver of mushroom or a few grains of rice does the same. The mistake worth avoiding is overfeeding, since food left uneaten breeds the wrong sort of mould and sours the culture.

Breeding needs no thought at all. Populations are entirely female and reproduce parthenogenetically, helped along by a Wolbachia bacterial partner, so there is no pairing, no sexing and no ratio to fret over. Given moisture and food, a modest starter culture booms within two to three weeks and becomes self-sustaining. The flip side is that a neglected culture crashes fast if it dries out, so the one habit I keep is a regular look at the moisture. They do not bite, sting or bother anything else in an enclosure, and they sit happily alongside isopods, dart frogs and geckos.

Among the varieties, this is the workhorse. Snowflake springtails are a similar cool-tolerant white, while the pigmented tropical types, the Thai reds, oranges and yellows, are more visible but happier in warmth. For most UK isopod rooms, and certainly cooler-running ones, Folsomia candida is the steady default, and plenty of keepers run it as the backbone of the springtail collection with a second species for resilience.
