Zebra Isopod Care Guide (Armadillidium maculatum)

The Zebra is the isopod a lot of people keep first, and it earns that place. It is bold enough to be worth watching, cheap enough to buy a proper starter group, and forgiving enough to survive the mistakes everyone makes in the first month. What follows is how to keep Armadillidium maculatum well, and which of the numbers you will find online are worth trusting.

The short version

Room temperature, a substrate that is damp at one end and dry at the other, leaf litter and rotten wood always available, and a permanent source of calcium. That is genuinely most of it. Zebras are a Mediterranean species from rocky, sunny ground, not a rainforest animal, and the commonest way to kill them is kindness in the form of too much water and not enough airflow.

Where they actually come from

Zebras have one of the smallest natural ranges of any isopod in the hobby: the far south-east of France, Monaco, and a narrow strip of north-west Italy in Liguria, immediately over the border. Occurrence records outside that area are introductions rather than native populations.

That matters for husbandry, because the habitat is not damp woodland. It is limestone hillside - rock crevices, stones, patchy leaf litter, sun on the ground. When you build the enclosure, you are copying a dry, well-ventilated place with damp pockets in it, not a terrarium that runs wet from end to end. Temperature

Anywhere from about 18 to 26C suits them, which in practice means a normal heated room with no equipment at all. They will keep going a little cooler than that and simply slow down. Sustained heat above the high twenties is the risk worth avoiding, particularly in a small tub in a sunny window, where the temperature swing is far larger than people expect.

No heat mat. If a room genuinely runs cold, a warmer room is a better answer than heating one wall of a small enclosure and drying out the substrate the animals moult in.

Humidity, and why the gradient matters more than the number

Aim for around 50 to 70 per cent, but treat that as a description of the enclosure rather than a target to chase. What Zebras need is a choice: a damp end where the substrate holds moisture, a dry end that is noticeably drier without being dusty, and enough ventilation that neither goes stagnant. The animals then place themselves, which they are far better at than we are.

Water one end, not the whole tub. Let the surface of the dry end actually dry between waterings. If you are getting mould on uneaten food, the answer is usually more airflow and less food rather than less water. Our guide to humidity for isopods goes through building the gradient in more detail.

One correction worth making, because it is repeated constantly: isopods do not breathe through gills. Armadillidium have pleopodal lungs, air-breathing structures on the underside of the abdomen. They still need moisture, but the mental model of a fish suffocating in dry air is the wrong one, and it is what leads people to seal the ventilation holes.

Substrate, litter and wood

Three to five centimetres of substrate is a workable minimum and more is better, because depth is what stops the damp end drying out in a week. On top of that goes leaf litter, generously, plus a few pieces of rotten hardwood. Litter and wood are not decoration. They are the food supply, the cover, and the surface the colony lives on.

Add cork bark or a flat stone for hides, and seed the tub with springtails on day one. Springtails eat the mould that grows on food you overestimated, which is the single most useful thing you can do to make a new enclosure forgiving.

Food, and the calcium question

The base diet is decaying leaf litter and wood, permanently available. Everything else is a supplement: a little vegetable matter, the occasional protein source, offered in small amounts and removed if it is not eaten within a day or two.

Calcium is the part people underestimate. Terrestrial isopods build a heavily mineralised cuticle and have to rebuild it at every moult, so leave cuttlebone or limestone in the enclosure permanently rather than dosing it occasionally. You will also see them eating their own shed skin, which is normal and is how they recycle the calcium they have already invested. Do not tidy the exuviae away. The two-tone moult that looks like a dying animal

This is worth knowing before you see it. Isopods moult in two halves. The back half sheds first, then the front half follows a few days later, so for that window the animal is visibly two different colours with a hard line across the middle. It looks wrong. It is completely normal, and it is a well-documented feature of terrestrial isopod biology rather than a hobby anecdote.

A mid-moult Zebra should be left alone. Do not pick it up, do not move its hide, and do not remove it as sick. The one genuine welfare issue attached to moulting is calcium, which is the argument for leaving a permanent source in the tub.

Breeding

Zebras breed readily at room temperature without intervention. Keepers generally report something in the order of six months from juvenile to breeding adult, and broods carried in the female's marsupium for a few weeks before release, faster when warm and slower when cool. Both of those figures come from keeper experience rather than published study, so treat them as a guide.

What this means in practice is that a starter group of ten is not going to become a visible colony quickly. Expect months before there is any surplus, and resist the urge to intervene. The most common breeding mistake is not husbandry at all, it is starting with too few animals in too large an enclosure and concluding that nothing is happening because nothing is visible.

A tight-fitting lid matters too. Not because Zebras are escape artists, but because ventilation holes large enough to be useful are also large enough for newly released young.

Yellow, Chocolate, and what a morph actually is

Beyond the standard black-and-white animal there are two widely available colour forms, and both are selectively bred hobby lines rather than wild localities. The Yellow Zebra carries the same banding in gold rather than white. The Chocolate Zebra swaps the black for a warm brown over a cream base. Care is identical for all three - same temperature, same gradient, same food. You are choosing an appearance, not a different animal.

Worth knowing: yellow-toned individuals do turn up in ordinary wild-type stock as well, so a yellowish Zebra is not automatically evidence of a selectively bred line.

Zebra or Clown? They are not the same species

These two get confused constantly, including by sellers. The Zebra is Armadillidium maculatum, striped, from the French Riviera. The Clown is Armadillidium klugii, a larger animal from the Adriatic coast around Croatia and Montenegro, patterned with rows of pale spots rather than bands. Different range, different size, different look. If you want the striped one, check the binomial rather than the common name. The whole genus is worth browsing in our Armadillidium collection.

Three things you will read that are not true

"They reach 20 to 25mm." They do not. Adults run about 14 to 18mm. The larger figures appear to come from confusion with bigger Armadillidium species. If you want a genuinely large isopod, look at something like Giant Canyons instead.

"A female produces up to 300 young per brood." That number comes from the literature on Armadillidium vulgare, a different and more prolific species, and it is not plausible for an animal this size.

"The stripes are a warning pattern that mimics a pill millipede." This circulates as though it were settled science. It is not. The published work on chemical defence in Armadillidium did not test this species at all, and the reviews describe the evidence for warning coloration in terrestrial isopods as anecdotal. It is an interesting idea and nothing more.

Where to start

A group of ten in a well-ventilated tub with a moisture gradient, deep litter, permanent calcium and springtails from day one. Leave it alone for a month.
