These are natural lightweight limestone pieces, chosen for isopod, millipede and other invertebrate enclosures. PostPods sources and selects each batch for its pale colour, porous surface and irregular shape, so what lands on your substrate looks the part and does real work at the same time. This is natural stone rather than anything moulded, so no two pieces are alike and sizes vary from one to the next.

A good piece of limestone does three jobs at once. It gives your animals a slow, steady source of calcium that they graze straight off the surface as they need it, which supports healthy moulting and, in the case of pill species, those heavily calcified shells. Over the weeks you will spot faint scrape marks and a little gentle erosion across the stone, which is simply your colony feeding. It also creates caves, ledges and shaded crevices where isopods can tuck themselves away and feel secure, and it mimics the karst limestone country that many of the most sought-after species come from, cave Cubaris especially, so you are recreating a key element of their wild home rather than just decorating the tub.

The listing gives you two options. Order the larger ornamental pieces and you will typically receive one or two substantial stones, big enough to act as the centrepiece of a setup while still feeding calcium into the enclosure over the long term. The smaller loose stones suit smaller tubs and are easy to scatter through a setup wherever you want a little extra mineral access or structure. Because they are cut and collected by hand, the loose stones are not always in stock, so take them when you see them.

In use, limestone asks very little of you. Give each piece a rinse before it goes in, then leave a piece or two in permanently and your animals will graze the surface for minerals whenever they want them, wearing it down so slowly that you will rarely need to top it up. Position the larger stones to throw shade and create that cave-like feel, tucking them where your animals already gather. Pair the lot with cuttlebone if you like to keep more than one calcium source on hand, and it sits happily alongside flake soil, leaf litter and cork. You will find the rest of the setup over in our accessories collection.
