Shredded rotten wood is naturally decayed hardwood, the pale, soft, crumbly material sometimes called white rotten wood that you find breaking down on any woodland floor. It plays two roles at once in an invertebrate setup. It is a foundational part of the substrate, and it is a food in its own right. Detritivores such as isopods, springtails, millipedes and roaches feed on decomposing wood exactly as they would in the wild, working nutrition out of the softened fibres and the microorganisms that colonise them as the wood slowly rots down.

What makes it so useful is that the hard work of decomposition has already happened. The tough cellulose has begun to break apart, so the wood is soft enough for small mouths to graze, and it carries the fungi and microbes that detritivores rely on to digest their food. We select broadleaf hardwoods such as birch and oak and leave out pine and other softwoods, whose resins and aromatic oils do many inverts no good. Good rotten wood should be pale, light in the hand and earthy smelling, and that is what we look for when we choose it.

It is all sourced from UK woodlands and frozen to see off mites, gnat larvae and any other hitchhikers before it reaches you, so you can add it straight to an enclosure without introducing anything unwanted. It comes ready to use in convenient shredded form, sized to mix easily through a substrate rather than sit on top of it.

In practice you can work it through the substrate as a food and moisture layer when you set an enclosure up, or lay it in patches under bark and leaf litter so your animals can graze at will. It holds damp well, which keeps a humid microhabitat ticking over, and it breaks down gradually as the colony feeds, so it doubles as slow release food and shelter. Alongside flake soil and a scatter of magnolia leaves, it forms the base of a healthy bioactive setup and helps springtail and isopod numbers build over time.

Keep any you are not using somewhere cool and dry, and give it a light mist to rehydrate if it has dried out before it goes in. It is one of those quiet staples that earns its place in almost every tank, and you will find it beside the rest of our substrate ingredients in the accessories collection.
