Warm amber is a colour you rarely see in the Cubaris genus, which is most of the appeal of the Amber Firefly. Where the genus tends toward muted greys and browns, this one carries a rich amber-to-orange right across the body that seems to glow against dark substrate, even in a dim enclosure. It is a genuine standout, the kind of premium Cubaris a collector builds a display around. Every colony we send is captive-bred here in the UK.
This is Cubaris sp. 'Amber Firefly', a rare warm-toned species from the forests of Southeast Asia, also sold as the Firefly Cubaris. One honest note on the name: it does not glow in the dark. There is no bioluminescence here; "Firefly" simply describes the warm amber cast of the shell, which is vivid enough to earn the comparison. It sits among the premium end of the genus, and its colour genuinely sets it apart there.
A medium Cubaris at around 10 to 18 mm, rounded in the classic cave-isopod shape, in amber through to warm orange. The exact tone varies from animal to animal and with conditions, so a colony has real depth rather than a single flat colour, and the amber deepens over successive moults as juveniles mature. Like the rest of the genus it conglobates into a tight ball when disturbed, and the warm colour stays on show even curled.
Amber Firefly is a warm-tropical Cubaris of medium difficulty, so it wants warmth, 22 to 28°C, and consistent humidity around 60 to 75% on a gradient rather than a soaked tub. Keep about a third damp with sphagnum and leaf litter and let the rest run a little drier, with enough ventilation to keep the air from going stale; overwetting is the one real risk, so mist to top up rather than saturate. Build a deep substrate on organic topsoil, flake soil and white-rotted hardwood rather than coco coir, with crushed limestone worked through for the constant calcium clean moults need, and give plenty of cork and leaf cover, as this is a shy, hiding species. Our complete Cubaris care guide covers the detail.
Leaf litter and decaying white wood are the base, kept topped up. Add small amounts of vegetable, the occasional bit of fruit, and regular protein such as fish flake or dried shrimp, plus a permanent calcium source. Its appetite is moderate, so go easy on fresh food and lift anything uneaten within a day or two before it moulds in the warmth. A springtail culture is worth running alongside to keep a premium colony clear of mould.
Amber Firefly breeds at the measured pace typical of premium Cubaris: a patient establishment, then steady growth once settled. Give a new group a couple of months to find its feet, keep conditions stable, and resist digging after them while they establish. Young are released fully formed and colour up as they moult. A larger starter group settles faster and gives better genetic spread.
The Amber Firefly suits the keeper with a little Cubaris experience who wants a genuinely rare, warm-coloured display species, and the collector rounding out a premium shelf alongside the Amber Ducky, Cappuccino and the iconic Rubber Ducky. It is not a first isopod, and not for anyone who over-waters or needs constant visible activity; a hardier accessible Cubaris like the Panda King is the better place to start.

Gorgeous little pods. I ordered these to add to my tiny colony; they’re quite active and love climbing. I often find them chilling as high up as they can get.
All arrived safe and healthy :)
Really incredible service, the day before dispatch Dan let me know he had mistaken a bag of his personal (heavily decayed) leaf litter in the freezer for a bag of fresh leaf litter, which was one of the items I had ordered. He offered to dispatch the decayed leaf litter (which is highly nutritious but not easy to supply to customers due to the time it takes to produce), substitute it for leaf litter substrate (which would usually cost more), or dispatch l the fresh leaf litter separately (or wait for it to be ready then dispatch together!) with no extra costs.
The communication was absolutely brilliant and I'd already had a high sense of trust in Postpods after much research and exploration of the site, having recommended it to a friend also who had a wonderful experience. The fast communication, number of options to correct a simple mistake, and the quality of the items (and safety of the pods! I couldn't find a single dead one and, in fact, I was sent some extras!) really solidifies why Postpods is regarded as the best in the isopod business in the UK.
I'm incredibly excited to order again and what started as choosing a cheaper seller for spiky pineapple isopods has really evolved into a lifetime loyalty & has deepened my passion for keeping invertebrates even further. Thanks Dan for providing such a lovely experience & for taking such brilliant care of your stock.
Alas I have few photos because I was so excited to dig into everything and finish setting up my enclosures that I didn't get much time to get photos, but I do have many photos of the isopods.
Third time for ordering from you I've bought powder orange isopods and dairy cow isopods and they are booming and all orders arrived all alive I wouldn't go anywhere else thank you for an easy and fast process
I got my first ever Isopods! After lots of research I chose these Magic Potions. They arrived safe and sound. All very active and of varying sizes. They have settled in well to their new home and are thriving. I also got all the needed substrate and other extras with this order. All items were perfect and well packaged. I even had a couple of little surprise extras. Thanks so much! I will definitely be ordering all my supplies and more Pods from here in the future.
