Long, lean and lemon-yellow, with a silhouette closer to a fossil than a woodlouse. This is one of the more otherworldly isopods you can keep. Porcellio bolivari 'Lemonade' is a giant Spanish species prized for its soft yellow colouring and its elongated, trilobite-like body, and you will sometimes see it sold as the Skeleton Isopod for that flattened, ribbed shape. The name is a nod to its outline and nothing more, so do not confuse it with the unrelated Armadillidium klugii 'Skeleton'. Think of the Lemonade as the lemon-yellow sibling of the 'Yellow Ghost', the very same species in a sunnier coat, and one of the flagship collector isopods in the hobby.
Up close, the skeletal look makes sense. The body is long, flat and bumpy, edged in pale legs and antennae, and it reaches up to around 30mm, which puts it firmly among the giant isopods. Older males are the real showpieces, drawing out long, elegant uropods at the tail end that stretch the skeletal outline further still. Like every Porcellio, the Lemonade cannot conglobate, so it will not roll into a ball the way a pill woodlouse does; instead it relies on speed, armour and wedging itself into cover. It sits happily alongside the other Spanish giants, whether that is the grey Titan (P. hoffmannseggii), the bold P. expansus 'Orange' or the striking P. magnificus.
Why keep one? Mostly for the spectacle. Few isopods carry this mix of size, colour and prehistoric shape, and a settled group makes a striking centrepiece in a display enclosure while quietly working through leaf litter and rotting wood as any good detritivore should. This is a species collectors reach for once they have a few easier colonies under their belt, and it earns its place among the most sought-after large Porcellio. If you enjoy comparing the genus, browse the wider Porcellio collection or read our guide to the different types of Porcellio isopods to see where the Lemonade fits.
Care is where this one asks for some experience. In the wild it is a cave-dwelling native of arid southeastern Spain, and that origin sets the rules. Keep it dry and exceptionally well ventilated, with only a small damp corner to moult and drink from rather than moisture throughout. Give it a warm room temperature and a deep substrate, since a large animal needs room to burrow, and keep high calcium available at all times for those big moults, with a little protein alongside. The one thing to get right is airflow. Stagnant, humid conditions are what undo this species; it does not crash overnight but slowly declines in stale, damp air, so err on the dry side and let the enclosure breathe. A base of flake soil topped with leaf litter and bark gives them the drier, nutritious ground they want.
Get the husbandry dialled in and the Lemonade rewards you. Breeding is steady rather than explosive: females carry their young in a brood pouch and release fully formed juveniles, which start pale and deepen towards that lemon-yellow as they mature. Keep the colony as a pure line and the colour holds true from one generation to the next. A modest springtail culture tucked into the damp corner helps keep mould in check around fresh food, though it will stay small in an enclosure this dry, which is just as it should be.
Every Lemonade we send is captive-bred here and packed with care, riding inside a ventilated tub of damp sphagnum moss that sits within a double-walled box to hold warmth and cushion the trip. We dispatch Monday to Thursday by tracked next-day Royal Mail, aiming for delivery by 1pm, and every order is covered by our live-arrival guarantee. We add a 20% overcount as standard, so a few extra always travel with your order.

Gorgeous little pods. I ordered these to add to my tiny colony; they’re quite active and love climbing. I often find them chilling as high up as they can get.
All arrived safe and healthy :)
Really incredible service, the day before dispatch Dan let me know he had mistaken a bag of his personal (heavily decayed) leaf litter in the freezer for a bag of fresh leaf litter, which was one of the items I had ordered. He offered to dispatch the decayed leaf litter (which is highly nutritious but not easy to supply to customers due to the time it takes to produce), substitute it for leaf litter substrate (which would usually cost more), or dispatch l the fresh leaf litter separately (or wait for it to be ready then dispatch together!) with no extra costs.
The communication was absolutely brilliant and I'd already had a high sense of trust in Postpods after much research and exploration of the site, having recommended it to a friend also who had a wonderful experience. The fast communication, number of options to correct a simple mistake, and the quality of the items (and safety of the pods! I couldn't find a single dead one and, in fact, I was sent some extras!) really solidifies why Postpods is regarded as the best in the isopod business in the UK.
I'm incredibly excited to order again and what started as choosing a cheaper seller for spiky pineapple isopods has really evolved into a lifetime loyalty & has deepened my passion for keeping invertebrates even further. Thanks Dan for providing such a lovely experience & for taking such brilliant care of your stock.
Alas I have few photos because I was so excited to dig into everything and finish setting up my enclosures that I didn't get much time to get photos, but I do have many photos of the isopods.
Third time for ordering from you I've bought powder orange isopods and dairy cow isopods and they are booming and all orders arrived all alive I wouldn't go anywhere else thank you for an easy and fast process
I got my first ever Isopods! After lots of research I chose these Magic Potions. They arrived safe and sound. All very active and of varying sizes. They have settled in well to their new home and are thriving. I also got all the needed substrate and other extras with this order. All items were perfect and well packaged. I even had a couple of little surprise extras. Thanks so much! I will definitely be ordering all my supplies and more Pods from here in the future.
