Eucorydia Care Guide: Sapphire and Giant Flower Cockroaches
Iriomote sits at the far south of the Ryukyu chain, closer to Taiwan than to the Japanese mainland, and its forest floor is where the hobby's Eucorydia yasumatsui stock originates. The other species kept here, Eucorydia dasytoides, comes from the same kind of country a few hundred miles west: the subtropical forests of southern China, Taiwan and northern Vietnam.
Both live in the litter layer of warm forests that are seasonally wet and permanently breezy. Almost every husbandry decision that matters follows from that second word.
The short version
- Two species in UK culture: the Sapphire Flower at around 10mm and the Giant Flower at 15 to 20mm.
- Nymphs are plain brown and stay that way for months. The metallic colour arrives only at the final moult.
- Ventilation kills more colonies than every other factor combined. Airier and drier than instinct suggests.
- Neither is a first cockroach, and the reason has nothing to do with technical difficulty.
The two species, and which is which
Asahina named Eucorydia yasumatsui in 1971 on Ryukyu material. Adults reach roughly 10mm, sapphire tegmina over an orange-marked body, and the colour is carried by both sexes. This is the smaller species, and the one most people encounter first.
Eucorydia dasytoides was described by Walker in 1868 and reaches 15 to 20mm, so roughly twice the length and considerably more than twice the presence. Adults come out metallic blue-green, often with orange or yellow banding across the wing covers. It is day-active, which is unusual in this family, so you actually see it.
A note on the name
You will find dasytoides listed in some places as a subspecies, Eucorydia aenea dasytoides, and that is what several large databases still carry. The Cockroach Species File treats it as a valid full species, following the 2017 revision of the genus by Qiu, Che and Wang, which also described five new Chinese species and tidied a long list of older names into synonymy. Both labels refer to the same animal, so a listing using the older combination is not selling you something different.
Neither of these is a first roach
This is the question worth answering plainly, because the genus attracts people through photographs and the photographs show the last four months of a much longer story.
Nothing here is technically demanding. There is no heating rig, no specialist equipment, no difficult feeding. What there is instead is a combination that punishes newcomers for reasons that have nothing to do with skill:
- The wait. Nymphs are unremarkable brown insects that spend most of their development buried out of sight. You are buying a promise months ahead of delivery.
- The short payoff. The adult stage, the part you bought the animal for, is the shortest part of its life.
- The unforgiving bit. A ventilation error does not announce itself. It shows up as a colony that quietly stops producing, by which point the cause is months in the past.
A first cockroach should let you make an ordinary beginner's mistake and recover from it. These will not. Ventilation is the whole game
Keepers lose entire cohorts of nymphs to nothing more exotic than a stuffy tub, and it is comfortably the most common failure with the genus.
The instinct with anything subtropical is to seal it in and hold the humidity up. That instinct is wrong here. What these animals want is air moving through the entire box, a substrate that is damp to the touch and no wetter, and a single corner kept heavier, so that each animal settles where it prefers instead of enduring the one setting you picked.
A sealed box at high humidity will look fine for weeks. The damage is already done by the time it stops looking fine, which is precisely why this is the detail to settle before any other.
Substrate and the long invisible phase
Nymphs live buried and stay buried, which makes depth the dimension worth spending on. Something in the region of 8cm of rich soil-based substrate under a thick cap of hardwood litter gives them somewhere to disappear into, and the litter doubles as food.
Then accept that a tub which looks empty is a tub that is working. Resist digging; there is nothing to find, and disturbing animals you cannot see buys you nothing. Seed springtails at setup, since deep litter plus occasional soft food is the exact combination mould likes.
Mine sit between 20 and 27°C with a few degrees cooler over winter, which reflects the seasonality of where they come from. Nothing about that needs precision equipment.
Feeding
Most keepers arrive expecting to feed these animals and end up learning that the enclosure already does it. Decayed litter is what they actually live on; anything else you add is a weekly garnish, in portions small enough to feel stingy. Soft food left sitting in deep litter is how mould gets its start, so lift whatever has not gone by the next day. Each listing sets out the exact menu I use.
Escape-proofing
Adult dasytoides climb smooth surfaces and adult males fly readily, so the lid stops being optional the moment your nymphs start maturing. Fit it before you need it, because the transition from invisible brown nymph to airborne adult is not gradual.
Which one to choose
If you want the larger animal and a colour that carries across a room, take the Giant Flower. If you want the more saturated blue and have less space, take the Sapphire Flower. The husbandry is close enough that keeping one prepares you for the other.
Buy several animals at different sizes, not a pair. Sexing is not practical, and overlapping generations are what give you a fresh adult as the previous one fades, which is the only arrangement in which this genus works as a long-term display. My full range sits under cockroaches for sale.
Common questions
Why are my Eucorydia brown?
Because they are nymphs. The metallic colour appears at the final moult and not before, in both species. A brown animal is not a different species or a failed one.
How long until they colour up?
Months. Beyond that, published rearing timelines for these species barely exist. Anyone quoting you a precise figure is quoting a guess. Buy mixed sizes and the wait matters less.
Do they smell, bite or infest?
No to all three. They are forest-floor detritivores with no interest in a kitchen and no capacity to establish in a British house.
Can I keep the two species together?
I would not. They are close relatives with near-identical requirements, which makes them easy to confuse as nymphs and impossible to separate again with any confidence.
Has this genus actually been studied?
More than most trade roaches. Fujita and Machida published a full embryological study of E. yasumatsui in 2017, describing egg structure down to the ten to fifteen micropyles on the underside of each egg. It is not husbandry work, but it does mean this is a genus that has been reared and examined in a laboratory, not one known only from shop copy.
