Santa Claus springtails, sold in the UK hobby under the name 'Redford White', are a chunky red-and-white springtail in the family Neanuridae. They want a small tub with a tight lid, a consistently damp organic substrate, high humidity and ordinary room warmth of 18 to 25°C. Feed them lightly on the mould and fungal growth in the substrate, topped up with a little brewer's yeast or crushed fish flake when you are building numbers. The thing that sets them apart is that they do not jump, so you can open the tub and watch them instead of chasing them across the room. An honest note on what they are
These animals are identified to family level only. Most coloured Neanuridae in the trade trace back to wild founder stock that was never placed to species, so nobody selling them can honestly give you a binomial. That is why this guide says Neanuridae sp. rather than naming a species, and why the care below is written for the family rather than for a named animal.
It matters less than it sounds. Care within the coloured Neanuridae is consistent enough that family-level guidance holds up in practice. But if a listing anywhere gives you a confident species name for a Santa Claus springtail, treat it with suspicion rather than as extra information.
Why they do not jump
Most springtails carry a furcula, a forked, spring-loaded appendage folded under the abdomen. Released, it flings the animal several times its own body length. That is where the name springtail comes from, and it is why opening a lively Folsomia culture can feel like setting off a firework.
Santa Claus springtails have no working furcula. They crawl, slowly and deliberately, on short legs, and the overall shape is closer to a walking gummy bear than to the sleek white springtail most keepers picture. Two practical consequences follow. The first is that they stay in the tub when you lift the lid. The second is that they are genuinely watchable: a cleanup crew you can see working, rather than one you take on trust.
They share this trait with orange springtails, which belong to the same family and are also effectively non-jumping. If you like the idea of a visible cleanup crew, those two are the pair to look at.
Setting up a culture
A small tub with a tight lid and only minimal ventilation is the whole setup. The tight lid is doing real work here: these animals want humidity held high and steady, and a heavily vented box will dry out faster than you can keep up with.
For substrate, coconut coir with a little organic compost and some crumbled hardwood suits them well. Keep it consistently damp throughout, like a wrung-out sponge, but never waterlogged: springtails breathe through the body surface and standing water drowns them as surely as drying out kills them. Temperature and humidity
They want 18 to 25°C, and an ordinary heated room in a British home sits inside that band the year round, so nothing needs plugging in. There is no heat mat and no thermostat involved in keeping these.
Humidity should stay high and constant. The tight lid does most of that job; mist with dechlorinated water when the surface starts to look less than damp. Tap water left standing for a day will do, or use water treated for aquarium use. What you are aiming for is a substrate that stays evenly moist all the way through rather than a wet layer sitting on a dry one.
Feeding a mould eater
Neanuridae have suctorial mouthparts, adapted for piercing and sucking rather than chewing, and they feed especially well on soft mould and fungal growth. This turns a normal keeping instinct on its head. In most invertebrate setups mould is a warning sign. In a Santa Claus tub, a little controlled mould is the food supply, and a culture with none is a culture with nothing to eat.
Left to themselves they will graze the mould, fungi and decaying matter already in the substrate. When you are building numbers for harvest, a light sprinkle of brewer's yeast or crushed fish flake every few days keeps the population climbing.
Feed sparingly. Overfeeding is the commonest way to sour a culture, and it is slightly counterintuitive with a mould eater: too much food grows more mould than even these animals can keep up with, and the tub turns against you.
Using them in a bioactive setup
They do the same work as any springtail. They take mould and fine organic matter at a scale isopods cannot reach, which is why the two are so often kept together. Isopods handle leaf litter and larger debris; springtails work the layer beneath that. Together they keep a bioactive enclosure balanced.
That makes them a natural fit alongside any isopod colony, a tropical Cubaris setup, or a millipede enclosure. The slow, non-jumping movement has one further advantage in a vivarium: it will not startle a nervous frog or gecko the way a jumping species can.
The trade-off is pace. They breed more slowly than the standard white springtail, so treat them as a steady, characterful addition rather than an explosive workhorse.
Santa Claus or Folsomia?
The honest comparison, because they are not competing for the same job.
- Choose Santa Claus springtails if you want a cleanup crew that adds visible life at soil level, if you have kept standard springtails and want something with more character alongside them, or if you are tired of a culture that pings across the room every time you open it.
- Choose Folsomia candida, the temperate white springtail, if you want fast, prolific cleanup, if you are seeding several enclosures at once, or if you need a culture that shrugs off a cool room. It is the default for good reason.

When they arrive
A new culture usually looks quiet for the first day or two. That is normal, and it is worth knowing before you worry: springtails settle after transit and tend to stay down in the substrate until conditions steady.
