The Drygoods Mystery Box is the supplies-side counterpart to our livestock mystery boxes: instead of animals, it is a curated selection of the foundation goods every bioactive keeper needs but rarely thinks to buy in one go. We choose the contents ourselves from the Drygoods and Accessories range, pulling together a practical spread of food, substrate, calcium and décor so you have the basics of a working enclosure in a single box rather than a dozen small decisions.

What tends to go inside is the everyday kit that keeps an isopod, springtail or millipede culture ticking over. You can expect substrate components such as shredded rotten wood, flake soil and leaf litter; a supplementary food or two, from protein flakes and bee pollen to algae wafers and dried shrimp; a calcium source like cuttlebone or crushed oyster shell; and a piece of décor such as cork bark or a lotus pod for cover and grazing. The exact mix shifts with what we have on the shelves at the time we pack it, so no two boxes read quite the same, but the theme stays consistent: the food, substrate and supplement foundation that underpins a healthy setup.

The idea behind it is simple. In return for letting us choose the mix, you receive noticeably more in supplies than the box itself costs, which makes it a low-risk, low-cost way to stock up the cupboard without much thought. It is also a pleasant way to try a few things you might not otherwise reach for; lichen sticks and bee pollen tend to earn a regular place in the cupboard once you have watched your isopods make short work of them, and discovering a new staple this way costs you very little.
