The Springtail Mystery Box is the most generous way to populate a bioactive setup with the other half of a working cleanup crew — a curated selection of springtail cultures from our current Springtails For Sale collection at substantial value uplift compared to buying species individually. The bigger the box, the bigger the uplift — and at the top tier, you receive double the value you pay.

The value proposition is straightforward:

  • £25 box — you receive £30 of springtail cultures (20% bonus value)
  • £50 box — you receive £70 of cultures (40% bonus value)
  • £75 box — you receive £120 of cultures (60% bonus value)
  • £100 box — you receive £180 of cultures (80% bonus value)
  • £200 box — you receive £400 of cultures (100% bonus value — your money doubles)

In exchange for letting us choose the species, you get substantially more springtail variety for your money than buying individually. The trade-off: this is a mystery box, so you don't pick what's in it — we curate from current stock based on the value tier and what's available at the time of dispatch.

Important — Cultures, Not Individual Animals

Worth being clear about up front: springtails are sold as established cultures — a substrate-based colony in a sealed container rather than a count of individual animals. Each culture contains hundreds to thousands of individual springtails plus their breeding substrate. You pour the culture into your enclosure (or seed a portion of it across multiple setups) and the colony establishes itself.

This is structurally different from the Isopod Mystery Box approach where you receive a stated number of individual animals. A springtail box delivers populations.

What's in the Box

Every box contains a curated selection of springtail cultures from our current collection. We stock three broad tiers of springtail species:

  • Workhorse tier — Temperate Springtails (Folsomia candida). The bulletproof white springtail every bioactive keeper should have. Hardy, prolific, tolerates UK room temperatures.
  • Visible-colour tier — Orange (Yuukianura), Orange (Bilobella), Yellow Albino, Lilac, and Snowflake species. Do the same bioactive cleanup job as Folsomia while being properly visible against dark substrate.
  • Premium tier — Thai Red (Lobella sp.), Lilac & Yellow combined cultures, and our ultra-rare Santa Claus Springtails (Neanuridae sp. "Redford White") — distinctive red individuals with characteristic white neck rings.

The species mix in any given box depends on the value tier and current stock availability. We don't pad boxes with weak cultures or unhealthy stock — what you receive is the same quality springtail cultures you'd get buying individually, just at considerably better value because we've chosen the mix.

What to expect at each tier:

  • £25 (£30 value): Typically multiple Folsomia cultures plus possibly one visible-colour starter (Orange or Yellow). Properly suited to populating one or two bioactive enclosures with reliable cleanup crew.
  • £50 (£70 value): A more substantial mix — typically combining Folsomia workhorses with two or three visible-colour cultures. Enough to populate several enclosures or seed a larger setup with proper variety.
  • £75 (£120 value): Multiple species across the workhorse and visible-colour range — typically including at least one less-common species (Lilac, Snowflake, or one of the Orange variants).
  • £100 (£180 value): A serious collection-builder box — multiple visible-colour species and quite likely the inclusion of a premium-tier culture (Thai Red or Lilac & Yellow combined).
  • £200 (£400 value): Our flagship tier — the box that doubles your money. Properly compelling because the inclusion of a Santa Claus Springtail culture alone represents a £100 retail value. Expect a comprehensive selection that may include Santa Claus, Thai Red, premium combined cultures, alongside substantial workhorse and visible-colour stock. Properly suited to serious collectors, dart frog breeders, or keepers establishing multiple bioactive vivariums simultaneously.

Specific species in any given box depend on current stock availability — we can't guarantee any particular species will be included. If you have strong preferences for specific species, the individual culture listings in the springtails collection are the right way to purchase those.

Why Buy a Springtail Mystery Box

Several genuine reasons make the mystery box worthwhile beyond just the value uplift:

Bioactive cleanup at scale. Springtails handle what isopods can't reach — mould, fungal growth, bacterial films, and fine organic matter in the substrate. A healthy mixed-species springtail population in a bioactive enclosure means less mould, fewer fungus gnats, and a self-maintaining substrate. The mystery box delivers that bioactive capacity across multiple setups in one purchase. For background, see our Complete Guide to Creating a Bioactive Terrarium.

Cost-effective variety. A single £100 individual purchase of premium springtails (Thai Red or Santa Claus) is significant. The mystery box at the higher tiers builds in substantial value beyond the headline pricing — multiple coloured cultures plus the chance of premium species inclusion at top tier.

Dart frog and small reptile breeding. Springtails are a staple food source for dart frogs (Dendrobatidae), mourning geckos, small dart-frog-sized amphibians, and juvenile reptiles. Established springtail colonies in a vivarium will continuously produce food while keeping the setup clean. A mystery box at £75 or above gives breeders enough cultures to seed multiple feeding setups simultaneously.

Variety across colour and behaviour. Different springtail species behave differently — some jump (the classic furcula-springing behaviour), some don't. Some are bright orange or red and visible; others are cryptic white workhorses. Some prefer warm tropical conditions; others (like Snowflake Springtails) thrive in cooler setups. A mystery box delivers this variety in one purchase, letting you experiment with which species suit your specific enclosure conditions.

Bioactive completeness. Springtails are the other half of a working bioactive cleanup crew — pairing with isopods to handle the full waste-processing pipeline. Buying springtails as a mystery box alongside (or separately from) the isopod mystery box gives you the complete bioactive foundation in two purchases.

Setting Up a Springtail Culture

Each culture arrives in a sealed container with established substrate. To use:

  1. Open carefully — established cultures may have hundreds or thousands of springtails near the lid; some species jump and others don't, so open slowly
  2. Pour or scoop into your bioactive enclosure substrate, or transfer a portion to a new culture container to maintain a backup colony
  3. Maintain backup cultures — keep at least one source culture in a separate small container so you can re-seed the enclosure if the population struggles
  4. Feed the cultures — small amounts of brewer's yeast, fish flakes, dried mushrooms, or uncooked rice every few days
  5. Keep humid — substrate should feel damp but not waterlogged. Springtails need humidity rather than ventilation

Establishment timeline: a healthy springtail culture seeded into a properly moist bioactive enclosure should be self-sustaining within 2-4 weeks. Populations may take longer to become visibly active if the enclosure has high competition (large isopod colony) or limited food sources.

General Springtail Care

Springtails are properly straightforward to keep across most species:

  • Temperature: 18-25°C suits most species. Snowflake Springtails specifically tolerate cooler conditions (down to 5°C) — useful for cool-climate setups. Tropical species (Thai Red, Orange variants) prefer the warmer end.
  • Humidity: 80-95% — high. Springtails need moisture more than ventilation. A sealed or partially-sealed enclosure works better than aggressively ventilated.
  • Substrate: Organic topsoil with bark chunks, leaf litter, and pieces of decaying wood. Charcoal pieces help maintain water quality. Avoid pine and other conifer materials.
  • Food: Mould and microbial growth on the substrate provides most nutrition. Supplement with small amounts of brewer's yeast, fish flakes, dried mushrooms, or cooked plain rice 1-2x weekly.
  • Lighting: Indirect or low light works well. Direct sunlight overheats cultures rapidly.

One useful distinction worth knowing: jumping vs non-jumping species. Most springtails use a springing organ called the furcula to launch themselves when disturbed — this can mean some "ping out" when you open the enclosure lid. Several species we stock (Thai Red Lobella, Orange Yuukianura) do not jump at all, making them properly useful when you want to open the enclosure without springtails escaping. If your box includes both types, treat all as potential jumpers when handling until you've identified which is which.

Live Arrival Guarantee

All springtail cultures — including those in mystery boxes — are covered by our live arrival guarantee. We pack carefully, ship via Royal Mail's next-day-by-1pm service Monday to Thursday, and back every order. Contact us within 24 hours of delivery if there's a problem and we'll sort it.

Standard PostPods orders include a 20% overcount on top of stated quantities, providing additional value buffer. For springtails, this manifests as larger cultures or additional starter cups rather than counts of individuals.

Realistic Expectations

You don't get to pick the species. That's the trade-off for the value uplift — we choose the mix from current stock. If you have specific species in mind, the individual culture listings are the right route, not the mystery box.

You're buying populations, not individuals. Each culture contains many hundreds to thousands of springtails plus their substrate. The "quantity" you're paying for is cultures and the breeding stock they contain, not a count of individual animals.

Stock availability shapes what you receive. The species mix in any given box depends on what's in stock at the time of dispatch. The premium-tier Santa Claus and Thai Red cultures are properly rare and may not always be available — boxes sent in different months may contain quite different species selections.

The value uplift is real, not a sales gimmick. The pricing tier of each box reflects genuine retail value of the cultures inside — not inflated retail prices used to make the bonus look bigger than it is. The £400 box contains £400 of springtail cultures at our standard individual-listing prices.

Some species are visible, some aren't. Folsomia and other white workhorses are tiny and largely cryptic in the substrate — you'll know they're working from the cleanliness of your enclosure, not from being able to see them constantly. Coloured species (Orange, Lilac, Thai Red, Santa Claus) are properly visible against dark substrate and provide visual interest in addition to cleanup capacity.

Setup costs are separate. The mystery box covers the cultures — enclosures, substrate, leaf litter, charcoal, and other setup items are separate purchases. Springtails work in established bioactive setups; if you're building from scratch, factor in enclosure and substrate alongside the culture purchase.

Read the individual species listings once you know what arrived. The springtails collection has detailed care information and species-specific notes for everything we stock — well worth checking once you've opened your box and identified what's inside.

Pair with the other mystery boxes for a comprehensive bioactive setup. The Isopod Mystery Box pairs naturally with this one — springtails plus isopods is the classic bioactive cleanup duo. Combining both gives you a complete starter for any bioactive vivarium across the substrate-processing pipeline.
