Powder White Isopods (Porcellionides pruinosus)

Catch a Powder White in the light and you'll see where this whole line of isopods gets its name. The shell carries a fine bloom, a pale dusting that sits on the surface like frost on cold glass. The scientific name says it plainly: Porcellionides pruinosus, from the Latin for covered in hoarfrost. On most Powder isopods that bloom lies over a deeper base colour, but here it settles across a ghostly white-to-pale-grey animal, so the whole creature looks lightly dusted. The powder isn't only for show, either; that layer is water-repellent, which has been measured rather than assumed, and it is laid down fresh before each moult.

Sometimes listed as White Out, the Powder White is the pale colour morph of the species most keepers simply call the Powder isopod. Juveniles tend to emerge close to solid white, then develop that soft, frosted sheen as they grow and moult. It's the same hardy animal behind the dusky Powder Blue and the warm Powder Orange, cooled right down to a chalky pale, and it holds lovely contrast against dark substrate and leaf litter.

These are not the slow, trundling isopods some people expect. Porcellionides pruinosus stays small, reaching around 1.5 cm at most, and it is fast, restless and constantly busy. Unlike many isopods it's often out in the open by day rather than waiting for the lights to go off. It also doesn't conglobate, so it can't roll into a protective ball the way a pill woodlouse does. Instead it trusts its speed, which is worth remembering at feeding time, since a quick colony will slip through gaps a slower species would never find. A settled group scurrying across the surface is a good part of the charm.

Care is plain and forgiving, which is why I point complete beginners towards this species as readily as old hands. The one real request is good ventilation paired with a moderate moisture gradient, not a wet box. I keep one corner damp with sphagnum and let the rest dry out, so the colony can choose its own comfort. Room temperature suits them all year in most UK homes, with no heat mat needed. A base of flake soil topped with magnolia leaf litter gives them cover, humidity and a steady food source in one go, and a little cuttlebone or crushed eggshell keeps their moults clean.

Feeding is much the same story. They graze constantly on decaying leaves and rotting wood, take vegetable scraps happily, and do noticeably better for a little protein now and then, a pinch of fish flake or dried shrimp every week or so. That appetite is what makes them such a superb bioactive clean-up crew, working through waste, mould and leftover food quickly. They also breed fast, with sub-adults often pairing up before they reach full size, so a small starter culture will build into a self-sustaining population with almost no help from you.

If you want a white clean-up crew that stays out of sight, the tiny Dwarf White is the usual pick, but the Powder White is a different proposition, larger, visible and well worth watching. Plenty of keepers run both, or collect all three Powder morphs together for a colony that drifts between pale, blue and orange as it grows.
