Large, thick wafers built on herring meal and soya, with wheat germ, spirulina, alfalfa and oak bark in the recipe, a superb food for isopods, millipedes, and cockroaches, and one that suits wood-eating species.

What makes these wafers stand out is the inclusion of oak bark, which provides cellulose, an important dietary component for wood-eating invertebrates. Many isopod species naturally consume decaying wood as a key part of their diet, and these wafers bring a little of that into a convenient, nutrient-dense format. At 17mm x 3mm, they're chunky and dense, holding together well in the enclosure and giving your colony something substantial to graze on over time.

Why These Wafers?

  • Oak bark: provides cellulose, part of the natural diet of wood-eating inverts
  • 38.3% crude protein, led by the herring meal and soya at the top of the recipe
  • Spirulina: a protein-rich blue-green alga with vitamins and minerals of its own
  • Wheat germ: an excellent source of fibre, fatty acids, and essential nutrients
  • Alfalfa (lucerne): adds plant-based nutrition and additional fibre
  • Rich in vitamins: A, D3, E, and C in generous amounts
  • Large 17mm x 3mm wafer: dense and long-lasting, softens gradually when misted

How to Use

Place one or two wafers into your enclosure and give them a mist. They'll soften over time and your inverts will gather around and graze on them. Replace any uneaten wafers after a couple of days. A fantastic complement to leaf litter, flakes, pond sticks, vegetables, and other protein sources.

For how best to offer a dense food like this, our article on feeding isopods algae pellets covers portioning, feeding spots and removing anything uneaten. If you want the same slow-release format without the oak bark, the spirulina algae wafers are the plant-heavy version and the pleco wafers the high-protein one.

The oak bark is there for wood-eating isopods and millipedes, which eat decaying wood as part of their natural diet. Browse our full accessories collection for leaf litter, rotting wood, and the other components of a varied invert diet.

For Fish and Shrimp

These are aquarium wafers at heart, and plecos, other algae-grazing catfish, freshwater shrimp and snails all take them. Feed what the tank clears overnight and lift out what is left. More foods for fish, turtles and reptiles are on foods for reptiles, turtles and fish.

Nutritional Analysis

Herring meal, soya, wheat, mycoprotein, wheat germ, spirulina, alfalfa, oak bark, zeolite, minerals, rosemary extract, tocopherols, colourants.

Size

Available in 100g and 250g bags of 17mm x 3mm wafers. The smaller bag suits a handful of tubs and will still take months to work through, since a wafer or two at a time is all a colony needs. The 250g is for larger collections, or for anyone who has already decided these are a fixture and would sooner not reorder every few months. Sealed and kept somewhere dry and dark, the wafers hold condition for a long time, so the bigger bag is not a gamble on freshness.
