Armadillo Tuberculatus Isopods

You expect an isopod to be smooth. The Tuberculatus is all bumps: a slate-blue-grey Greek pillbug covered in the tubercles that give it its name, so the whole animal reads as armoured, almost reptilian. It is a genuinely different look from the spotted and striped Armadillidium that fill the hobby, and it rolls into a tight ball like the rest of the family. The one thing it asks in return is a setup that runs against every isopod instinct: keep it dry.

Introduction

This is Armadillo tuberculatus, a dry-climate species from Mediterranean Greece. The genus Armadillo is the type genus of the whole Armadillidae family, the one that lent its name to Armadillidium and the rest, so keeping it connects you to the foundation of the conglobating isopods rather than the more familiar derived morphs. It is uncommon in the hobby and, kept correctly, genuinely hardy. Compare it across the Armadillo range.

Appearance

A medium isopod, up to around 15 mm, in cool slate-blue to grey-blue over a heavily tuberculate, bumpy shell. Juveniles can look more spiky and less obviously blue, with the slate tones deepening as they mature, so an established adult colony shows the fullest colour. Like all Armadillidae it conglobates into a tight ball when disturbed, and the bumpy texture stays visible even rolled, which makes for a distinctive defensive shape.

Care

This is the part that matters, and it runs counter to almost everything else in an isopod room: keep it dry. It comes from dry Greek hillsides, wants low humidity of 40 to 60% and high ventilation, and overwetting is by a distance the most common way it is killed. Keep the bulk of the enclosure genuinely dry, with only one small damp corner for hydration and moulting, mist sparingly if at all, and prioritise airflow over moisture retention when you set the tub up. Build a drier substrate of topsoil with generous sand for drainage and only a little sphagnum, mix limestone or crushed eggshell through for the calcium its heavy shell needs, and keep dry oak or magnolia leaf litter and cork over the top. It also likes it warm, 22 to 28°C, a touch warmer than many isopods.

Diet

An unfussy detritivore that suits its dry home well: dried hardwood leaf litter and white-rotted wood as the constant base, small amounts of vegetable, and protein once or twice a week. Dried foods are worth favouring here, as fresh food moulds fast in a warm, dry-but-not-sterile tub, so feed small and clear leftovers quickly. Keep a permanent calcium source going for clean moults of that thick, tuberculate shell.

Breeding

Armadillo tuberculatus breeds more slowly than a typical Armadillidium, so patience is the watchword: a colony takes several months to establish, then grows steadily once it is settled into genuinely dry conditions. Give it warmth, the dry setup with its single damp corner, strong airflow and constant calcium, and leave it undisturbed to find its feet. Reaching that established state through correct dry husbandry is the whole game.

It is a poor fit for anyone used to moist setups who cannot switch habits, since here overwetting, not drought, is what kills.
