Every eye-catching granulatum morph in the hobby, the pearl-white, the citrus-washed, the vivid orange Naranjito, traces back to this animal: the standard Armadillidium granulatum, the Yellow Spanish Isopod. It is the foundation the selective work is built on, and it is a handsome, characterful woodlouse in its own right, so there is a good case for keeping the original rather than only its offshoots. The look is a dark grey-to-black body scattered with bright yellow spots, all of it carried on a distinctly granulated, faintly bumpy shell that gives the species both its name and its texture.
It is a Spanish animal, at home around the Costa Blanca and across the Iberian Peninsula, and like most dry-country Mediterranean isopods it takes UK room conditions in its stride. It is also one of the larger Armadillidium going, with big adults reaching around 20 to 25 mm, which gives a settled colony real presence. The yellow spotting varies a lot from one animal to the next, from sparse pale flecks to dense bright patterning, which is exactly the raw material keepers have selected into the various Orange, White Pearl and Citrus Ghost lines. Start with the standard and you have both a fine display colony and a base to breed from.
The care is straightforward and forgiving, which makes granulatum a sensible step up from the most basic beginner species. Being a dry-country animal it wants a moisture gradient rather than a wet box: aim for something around 50 to 70% across the tub, one lightly damp corner under sphagnum and leaf litter and the rest left to breathe and dry between mistings, with good cross-ventilation over the top. Normal UK room temperature suits it the year round, roughly 15 to 26°C. Like every true pill woodlouse it conglobates, rolling into a tight sealed ball when startled.
Set a starter colony up in a five to ten litre tub with a clip-lock lid and cross-vented sides. For substrate I use a living base of flake soil, well-rotted hardwood and organic topsoil, five centimetres or so deep for burrowing. A plain coco-coir base is best kept out of it, holding damp while feeding a substrate-grazer nothing as it breaks down. Cap it with a thick layer of hardwood leaf litter, magnolia and oak both good, add cork bark for cover, and leave a calcium source such as cuttlebone or crushed eggshell in permanently for firm, clean moults.
Feeding is no trouble. Leaf litter and rotting wood are the always-available staple; on top of that offer soft veg like courgette, squash and sweet potato a couple of times a week, lift out anything uneaten within a day, and give a little protein such as fish flake or dried insects now and then to keep a breeding colony productive. As with all Armadillidium they will graze soft plants and moss in a planted setup, so choose tougher greenery if you want it to last.
Breeding is reliable once the drier gradient is right, the female carrying young in a brood pouch and releasing live miniatures that pick up their spotting as they mature. A group given warmth, calcium and steady food builds into a self-sustaining colony over a season. Browse the wider Armadillidium collection to see where it sits, or compare it with the speckled Magic Potion. Every order is captive-bred, boxed double-walled around a ventilated tub of damp sphagnum, and posted Monday to Thursday by tracked next-day Royal Mail with a live-arrival guarantee and a small overcount as standard.

Really incredible service, the day before dispatch Dan let me know he had mistaken a bag of his personal (heavily decayed) leaf litter in the freezer for a bag of fresh leaf litter, which was one of the items I had ordered. He offered to dispatch the decayed leaf litter (which is highly nutritious but not easy to supply to customers due to the time it takes to produce), substitute it for leaf litter substrate (which would usually cost more), or dispatch l the fresh leaf litter separately (or wait for it to be ready then dispatch together!) with no extra costs.
The communication was absolutely brilliant and I'd already had a high sense of trust in Postpods after much research and exploration of the site, having recommended it to a friend also who had a wonderful experience. The fast communication, number of options to correct a simple mistake, and the quality of the items (and safety of the pods! I couldn't find a single dead one and, in fact, I was sent some extras!) really solidifies why Postpods is regarded as the best in the isopod business in the UK.
I'm incredibly excited to order again and what started as choosing a cheaper seller for spiky pineapple isopods has really evolved into a lifetime loyalty & has deepened my passion for keeping invertebrates even further. Thanks Dan for providing such a lovely experience & for taking such brilliant care of your stock.
Alas I have few photos because I was so excited to dig into everything and finish setting up my enclosures that I didn't get much time to get photos, but I do have many photos of the isopods.
Third time for ordering from you I've bought powder orange isopods and dairy cow isopods and they are booming and all orders arrived all alive I wouldn't go anywhere else thank you for an easy and fast process
I got my first ever Isopods! After lots of research I chose these Magic Potions. They arrived safe and sound. All very active and of varying sizes. They have settled in well to their new home and are thriving. I also got all the needed substrate and other extras with this order. All items were perfect and well packaged. I even had a couple of little surprise extras. Thanks so much! I will definitely be ordering all my supplies and more Pods from here in the future.
Really great purchase! They all arrived alive and well and they are already multiplying. They are really gorgeous and nice to see.
I prepared my viv for these, in accordance with the detailed instructions on the website and thankyou so much for the instructions as they are all moving around and exploring the viv and some are eating already. Without those guidelines I would have killed them with too much moisture. They are interesting in a different way
