Caramel Cream Isopods (Cubaris sp.)

Among the Cubaris, most of the attention goes to the bold and the flashy: the bright markings, the sharp contrast, the morphs that shout across a room. Cubaris sp. 'Caramel Cream' is the quiet one, and I have a real soft spot for it. It works in soft, creamy caramel and light caramel-brown tones, warm and gentle rather than loud, and it is all the lovelier for being understated. If you are drawn to the calmer end of the genus, this is the isopod I would point you towards first.

The body is smooth and capsule-shaped, neatly segmented, and it shows that warm colour off beautifully. They arrive pale and almost translucent as juveniles, then deepen into their creamy caramel tones with each moult, so an established colony carries a lovely spread of shades, from the soft young to the richly coloured adults. At roughly 20 to 30 mm, this is one of the larger Cubaris, easy to watch and easy to appreciate, and like the rest of the genus it curls into a tight defensive ball the moment it feels disturbed, tucking that warm colour into a neat little sphere.

The temperament matches the colouring. They are calm, peaceful and a little shy, happy to shelter among cover and content to share a bioactive setup without troubling plants or tankmates, and as detritivores they earn their keep by working steadily through decaying matter. This is a premium, steady-breeding morph, and it sits comfortably alongside our other warm-toned Cubaris: the brighter glow of the Amber Firefly, the marbled Cappuccino, the famous face of the Rubber Ducky, and the orange warmth of the Sunset.

Care follows their origins. These are cave-adapted isopods from the humid, limestone-rich hills of Thailand, and they want warmth of around 21 to 26°C held fairly steady. Give them a humid gradient rather than a wet box, with a damp end at around 75 to 85% and a drier far end, so they can choose where to settle. Good cross-ventilation keeps the air fresh, and the aim throughout is moist, never wet. They cope far better with steady conditions than with sudden swings, so keep the enclosure away from draughts, radiators and direct sun.

Build them a living base rather than a plain one. I use flake soil, rotted hardwood and topsoil layered several centimetres deep, which holds moisture, feeds the colony and gives them room to burrow. I would avoid a plain coco-coir base, which does little for them. Far more important is a steady source of calcium, so work crushed limestone through the mix and keep it topped up. A generous top layer of hardwood leaf litter finishes the setup, and magnolia leaf litter is my pick for long-lasting cover.

I would pair any Caramel Cream setup with a springtail culture. Springtails stay on top of mould and microbial growth at a scale the isopods cannot manage, which counts for a lot in the humid conditions these Cubaris need, and they live alongside the colony without any friction. Females brood their young in a pouch and give birth to live, fully formed juveniles, and given stable warmth, humidity and plenty of calcium, a colony builds quietly and steadily. There is no rush with this one. Give it stability and a little patience, and it rewards you.
