The Cockroach Mystery Box is the most generous way to start or expand an ornamental cockroach collection — a curated selection from our current Cockroaches For Sale collection at substantial value uplift compared to buying species individually. The bigger the box, the bigger the uplift — and at the top tier, you receive double the value you pay.

The value proposition is straightforward:

  • £25 box — you receive £30 of cockroaches (20% bonus value)
  • £50 box — you receive £70 of cockroaches (40% bonus value)
  • £75 box — you receive £120 of cockroaches (60% bonus value)
  • £100 box — you receive £180 of cockroaches (80% bonus value)
  • £200 box — you receive £400 of cockroaches (100% bonus value — your money doubles)

In exchange for letting us choose the species, you get substantially more cockroach for your money than buying individually. The trade-off: this is a mystery box, so you don't pick what's in it — we curate from current stock based on the value tier and what's available at the time of dispatch.

Not Pest Species — Important Reassurance

This matters enough to address up front. Every cockroach we stock is an ornamental, feeder, or conservation species from tropical and subtropical regions. None of them are pest species. None can survive UK ambient temperatures. None can establish in homes or breed in walls. If one ever escapes, it will die within hours to days, not start a colony.

The UK's pest-control laws target a handful of synanthropic species like Blattella germanica and Periplaneta americana — common house roaches. We don't sell those and never will. The species you'll receive in any mystery box are striking, often genuinely beautiful insects that are about as far from the German or American house roach as it's possible to get. Most non-keepers can't even identify them as cockroaches at first glance.

All species we stock are legal to keep in the UK without licence. Captive-bred only — never wild-caught.

What's in the Box

Every box contains a curated selection of cockroaches from our current collection. We stock three broad groups:

  • Display species — Domino, Emerald, Sapphire Flower, Giant Flower, Four-Spotted Jade, Centurion Porcelain, Headlight, Glowspot, Chrome, Madagascar Hissing roaches. Visually striking species people keep for the aesthetic.
  • Feeder species — Shadow Cockroach (parthenogenetic, females only) and Banana Cockroach. Reliable, easy-breeding species used for reptile and amphibian diets.
  • Conservation species — most notably the Simandoa Cave Roach, which is extinct in the wild and survives only through captive breeding programmes worldwide.

The species mix in any given box depends on the value tier and current stock availability. We don't pad boxes with substandard stock or unhealthy specimens — what you receive is the same quality cockroaches you'd get buying individually, just at considerably better value because we've chosen the mix.

What to expect at each tier:

  • £25 (£30 value): Typically an entry-level mix — Domino Cockroaches, Centurion Porcelain, Headlight, or Glowspot at small numbers, plus perhaps a feeder colony starter (Shadow or Banana). Likely 5–10 nymphs or a small adult group. Properly suited as a first cockroach purchase.
  • £50 (£70 value): A more substantial mix — typically combining display species with one upgrade (Chrome, Madagascar Hissing, or a small starter of a flagship species). Likely 10–15 individuals across two or three species.
  • £75 (£120 value): Multiple species across the display range — typically including at least one mid-tier flagship (Giant Flower, Four-Spotted Jade) alongside hardy starter species.
  • £100 (£180 value): A serious collection-builder box — multiple species, typically including at least one premium display species (Emerald, Sapphire Flower) and substantial quantities across the selection.
  • £200 (£400 value): Our flagship tier — the box that doubles your money. Expect a properly comprehensive selection that may include rarer species (Simandoa Cave Roach, Emerald, Sapphire Flower), substantial starter colonies, and species across the full collection range. Properly suited to collectors building a comprehensive cockroach collection or breeders establishing multiple colonies simultaneously.

Specific species in any given box depend on current stock availability — we can't guarantee any particular species will be included. If you have strong preferences for specific species, the individual product listings in the cockroaches collection are the right way to purchase those.

Why Buy a Mystery Box

Several genuine reasons make the mystery box worthwhile beyond just the value uplift:

The discovery factor. Cockroaches are properly underrated — the ornamental species in the modern hobby look nothing like the pest reputation suggests. The mystery box exposes you to species you might not have thought to look for, including some that often become favourites once people actually see them in person.

Cost-effective collection building. If you're building toward a substantial cockroach setup with multiple species, the value uplift at higher tiers makes the mystery box genuinely the most economical route. A £200 box delivering £400 of cockroaches represents a serious cost saving compared to buying the same value individually.

Feeder colony establishment. If you keep reptiles, amphibians, or large invertebrates, a mystery box can deliver substantial feeder colonies (Shadow, Banana) alongside display species — properly cost-effective compared to buying feeders by the small batch.

Bioactive vivarium variety. Many ornamental cockroach species coexist peacefully in bioactive setups alongside isopods, springtails, and millipedes. The mystery box delivers cockroach variety in one purchase — properly useful if you're building large display vivariums where multiple invertebrate species improve the overall ecology.

Conservation contribution. If your box happens to include Simandoa Cave Roaches, you're directly supporting the captive breeding programme for a species that no longer exists in the wild. The wild Simandoa population was eliminated by bauxite mining in Guinea — every living individual is descended from rescue captive breeding stock. Genuinely meaningful conservation value.

Setting Up for Mixed Cockroach Species

Because the species mix varies, here's a general-purpose setup that works for most cockroaches you might receive. Specific species may benefit from slightly tailored care — read the individual product listings in the cockroaches collection for species-specific guidance once you know what arrived.

A plastic storage container or glass vivarium of 30 × 30 cm minimum floor area suits most starter colonies — larger boxes (£75 and above) may need bigger enclosures to accommodate the variety. Ventilation matters: cross-ventilation through mesh-covered holes on opposite sides prevents the stagnant high humidity that causes mould.

Critical setup consideration: flight risk varies dramatically by species. Some species (Panchlora Banana, Emerald, Gyna Centurion and Chrome) have adults capable of flight. Others (Domino, Jade, Shadow, Headlight, Glowspot, Simandoa) cannot fly at all. If your box includes a flying species, a secure lid with no gaps becomes essential — flying roaches escape through ventilation gaps you'd never notice. If you're unsure which species in your box can fly, treat all as potential fliers until you've identified them and consulted the individual care listings.

Provide cork bark for hides, decaying wood for nymphs to shelter in, and a substrate appropriate for the dominant species in your box. Most display species do well on a mix of coconut fibre, oak leaf litter, and chunks of decaying hardwood — though we recommend topsoil plus sphagnum where possible.

General Care Across Species

Most tropical cockroaches share broadly similar requirements:

  • Temperature: 22–27°C suits the majority of display species. Most tolerate UK room temperature year-round; heating may be needed in winter for active breeding. Madagascar Hissing roaches and several others tolerate the cooler end of the range.
  • Humidity: 60–75% with a moisture gradient. Mist one corner of the enclosure 2–3 times per week.
  • Ventilation: Critical. Stagnant air causes mould; good airflow is essential for colony health.
  • Diet: Generalist omnivores. Offer fresh fruit and vegetables (carrot, courgette, cucumber, banana, apple), supplementary protein (fish flakes, dried shrimp), and a calcium source (cuttlebone, crushed limestone). Most species also benefit from jelly pots for hydration and supplementary feeding.
  • Substrate: Most species do well on coconut fibre or topsoil/sphagnum mixes with leaf litter top layer. Avoid pine or other conifer substrates.

Madagascar Hissing roaches specifically benefit from rougher bark for climbing and prefer slightly drier conditions than the average display species.

Cohabitation

Most ornamental cockroach species coexist peacefully in bioactive setups alongside isopods and springtails. They occupy slightly different niches and don't compete aggressively for resources. The combination is ideal for larger reptile bioactive vivariums where you need serious waste-processing capacity.

One important caveat: don't keep cockroaches with millipedes. Cockroaches will eat millipede eggs, which damages millipede colony reproduction. If you're keeping both groups, give them separate enclosures.

Live Arrival Guarantee

Standard PostPods orders include a 20% overcount on top of stated quantities, providing additional value buffer.

Realistic Expectations

You don't get to pick the species. That's the trade-off for the value uplift — we choose the mix from current stock. If you have specific species in mind, the individual product listings are the right route, not the mystery box.

Stock availability shapes what you receive. The species mix in any given box depends on what's in stock at the time of dispatch. Boxes sent in different months may contain quite different species selections. If a particular species is sold out, it won't be in any box that month regardless of tier.

The value uplift is real, not a sales gimmick. The pricing tier of each box reflects genuine retail value of the cockroaches inside — not inflated retail prices used to make the bonus look bigger than it is. The £400 box contains £400 of cockroaches at our standard individual-listing prices.

You may receive nymphs, adults, or mixed groups. Most boxes contain a mix of life stages — nymphs at the bottom of the value tier (smaller individuals at lower per-unit cost) progressing toward adult specimens at higher tiers. Nymphs grow into the spectacular adult colouration through several moults; if you receive juveniles of species like Emerald or Sapphire Flower, expect their full colouration to develop over time.

Setup costs are separate. The mystery box covers the livestock — substrate, enclosure, leaf litter, calcium sources, and other setup items are separate purchases. The Drygoods & Accessories collection covers the supplementary equipment side.

Read the individual species listings once you know what arrived. The cockroaches collection has detailed care information for every species we stock — well worth checking once you've opened your box and identified what's inside.

Pair with the other mystery boxes for a comprehensive invertebrate setup. The Millipede Mystery Box and Isopod Mystery Box work on the same value-uplift basis with their respective collections. Combining all three gives you a properly comprehensive starter for a bioactive setup across cockroaches, isopods, and millipedes.
