Leaf Litter for Isopods (Mixed Broadleaf & Bamboo, 1L)

This is our mixed broadleaf litter and bamboo leaf litter blended in one bag, and the point of the blend is speed, or rather two speeds. The broadleaf fraction is the same blend of dried British hardwood leaves we pack on its own, birch, oak and beech among them, collected from woodland across Southern England away from paths, roads and dog-walking areas, then aged naturally for several months. The bamboo fraction brings the long, slender, tougher leaves that decay far more slowly. Each batch is selected and packed by hand here at PostPods.

Why mix them? Because a litter layer has two jobs, feeding the colony and structuring the floor, and no single leaf does both at once. The broadleaf softens quickly, grows the film of microbes and fungi that detritivores actually graze, and gets eaten first. The bamboo holds its shape for months, keeps the layer open and airy, and stays put as cover while the softer leaves vanish, and being low in tannins and naturally mould-resistant it earns its place even in the dampest corner. The result is one layer that feeds now and still looks like a forest floor weeks later, with a varied mix of shapes and textures for the animals to pick through.

Use it the way you would any litter, generously. Lay a layer across the substrate thick enough that you cannot see the soil beneath, treat it as the constant base of the diet rather than an occasional extra, and top it up whenever it starts to thin; with detritivores there is little risk of offering too much. The layer holds humidity and gives mancae and juveniles somewhere safe to shelter and moult, and the fine bamboo leaves make cover at a scale that suits dwarf species and springtails particularly well. It works dry or lightly misted, and it sits as naturally in a planted display enclosure as in a working culture tub.
