Unicorn Snail Care (Subulina octona)

This animal got around the world by hiding in plant pots. Subulina octona now lives across humid tropical and subtropical lowlands on every continent that has them, and in the mid temperate latitudes of the northern hemisphere it turns up in one habitat only: the inside of a heated greenhouse. A 2024 Italian study found it under glass at the MUSE science museum in Trento and the Biodiversity Garden in Padua, and described it, fairly, as a well-known travelling snail. That one fact carries most of the husbandry. It tells you the animal wants warmth and damp, and that a British room will supply neither on its own.

What you are actually buying

The Unicorn Snail is named for its shell, which is an elongated spike, not the coiled dome most people picture. It is described in the taxonomic literature as pearly off-white, glossy or waxy, and sub-transparent when the shell material is unworn, so a torch held behind a fresh-shelled one shows you something of the animal inside.

On size, the published figures cluster tighter than the hobby ones. An Italian study measured greenhouse shells at 12.1 to 16.0 mm tall and 3.3 to 4.1 mm across with seven to nine whorls; a Czech species description gives 14 to 17 mm and nine to eleven whorls. Taken together that is a published range of roughly 1.2 to 1.7 cm. Hobby sources commonly say around 2 cm, and well-fed captive animals may well run larger than wild or greenhouse ones, but the 3 cm upper end this listing has carried is not a figure I can source anywhere. Work to the measured range and treat the rest as unconfirmed.

One naming note, since it comes up. Older references put this species in the family Subulinidae and you will still see that in print; current catalogues fold the group into Achatinidae, the same family that holds the giant African land snails. Nothing about the care changes either way.

Warmth, and why a British room is not enough

This is the part most care sheets skip. The best measurement of what a British house actually runs at comes from the Energy Follow-Up Survey, which logged temperatures in 823 English dwellings through 2011 and 2012: a whole-dwelling mean of 19.0°C across the heating season, 18.1°C at the December low, and 21.5°C at the July and August peak. That is measured, not recommended, and it is English, not UK-wide.

Set that against a tropical lowland snail and the answer falls out. Aim for 21 to 26°C, which is the band my giant African land snail guide gives and sits inside the 20 to 26°C the listing quotes, with activity and breeding picking up at the top of it and the listing putting that breeding band a little higher again, at 24 to 27°C. A typical British room sits below all of that through most of the year and brushes the bottom of it only in high summer. So you heat, and you heat through a thermostat. A mat with nothing regulating it is what cooks a small culture; a regulated one is how a British keeper reaches the range at all. Humidity wants to be high, 75 to 85 per cent, over three or four centimetres of substrate that stays wet to the bottom and not only at the surface.

Calcium, on a shell this thin

A snail's shell is essentially calcium carbonate, and the animal builds it continuously for its whole life. Worth being precise here, because it is not a skeleton in the sense a backbone is, which is the confusion behind the question of whether snails are vertebrates: the shell is secreted from the outside in, and the animal has no internal support at all. What it has instead is a permanent calcium bill.

A small species with a delicate spire has less margin than a heavy-shelled one, so a shortage shows up faster and the thin, chalky band it leaves never quite recovers. Keep cuttlebone in there permanently instead of treating calcium as an occasional offering, and put leaf litter in for grazing and cover. Why a few snails does not stay a few snails

Two things are true about this species that together explain the population curve.

The first is that it is a facultative self-fertiliser. Every individual is a hermaphrodite, and one snail on its own can produce young without ever meeting another. A single animal is enough to found a colony, which is also why it has travelled the world so successfully in pot plants.

The second is the part worth getting right, because it is easy to get wrong. A four-year laboratory study of the species describes its life history as a combination of long lifespan, early sexual maturity, indeterminate growth and egg retention. Egg retention is a specific thing, and it is not live birth: the embryo does most of its developing inside the parent, and what gets laid is an egg already well advanced. The same study separates that from true ovoviviparity, where the parent releases juveniles and no egg is laid at all. This snail is in the first category. It lays eggs, and those eggs are close to hatching when they arrive.

So the eggs are there and you can find them, which means the standard advice works: if you want to hold the numbers steady, take them out. Hatching in this species has been recorded between one and fifteen days after laying, with egg viability near 95 per cent, so almost everything you leave in will come through. Checking the substrate now and again is the whole of the technique.

The law, and it is not optional

Owning these and selling them breaks no law in Britain, and no licence is involved. Letting one go is a different matter entirely. Under section 14 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence in England and Wales to release, or to allow to escape into the wild, any animal of a kind not ordinarily resident in and not a regular visitor to Great Britain in a wild state.

The temptation is to think it hardly matters for a snail that could not last a British winter, and the record supports that reading: no outdoor population has been reported anywhere in the mid temperate north, only greenhouse ones. But greenhouses are exactly where it does turn up, and Britain is already on that list alongside Ireland, Denmark and Germany. The law does not grade the offence by how likely you think the outcome is. Keep a well-fitting lid on and check it after you have had your hands in the tub.

Parasites, stated plainly and then put in proportion

Surveys of wild snails in Brazil have found Subulina octona naturally carrying Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the rat lungworm, which causes eosinophilic meningitis in people. A 2024 study of urban gastropods at Macapá in the Brazilian Amazon found three infected individuals of this species, and a 2022 retrospective of the Brazilian national reference laboratory's own diagnostic records found the parasite in three of the twenty-seven batches of this species it examined.

Now the proportion. Those are wild-collected animals in a region where the parasite is established, and the life cycle runs through rats. It is not an argument against keeping a captive-bred culture. It is a solid reason to buy captive-bred stock instead of imported wild animals, and to wash your hands after you have had them in the enclosure, which is what you should do after handling any animal anyway.

Where it earns its place

Alongside isopods and springtails it fills a niche neither of them quite covers. Isopods work through the substrate and springtails work the surface film; the snail grazes the harder surfaces, the glass, the wood and the leaf undersides, and keeps them clear as the setup matures.
