Botanicals for Isopods: Pods, Bark and What They Actually Do

Leaf litter and rotten wood are the food. Cork bark is the furniture. Everything else in the botanicals section, the lotus pods and seed cases and lichen-covered twigs, sits somewhere between the two, and it is genuinely hard to tell from a photograph what any of it is actually for.

This is a straight answer to that. What each one does, what none of them do, and the one thing about preparation that is easy to get wrong when you buy several at once.

Start here: they are not food, exactly

The thing worth understanding first is what a detritivore is eating when it works on a piece of dead plant matter, because it is not really the plant matter.

Isopods, millipedes and springtails live off the fungi and bacteria that colonise dead material, far more than off the material itself. Our piece on fresh versus well-rotted leaf litter puts it as butter on toast: the leaf is the toast, the microbial growth is the butter, and your animals are eating the toast largely to get at the butter.

That reframes the whole botanicals question. A woody pod that takes six months to soften is not offering much food on day one. What it is offering is surface: somewhere for biofilm to establish, somewhere small enough for a springtail or a newly released juvenile to sit inside, and structure that holds its shape while it slowly becomes edible. Leaf litter gives you food quickly and collapses. Botanicals give you architecture that turns into food slowly.

Both are worth having, and they are not substitutes for each other.

What each one actually does

Lotus pods

The dried seed head of the sacred lotus, Nelumbo nucifera. Botanically it is not a pod at all, it is a spongy receptacle, and the pits in that flat face held fruits rather than seeds. It is built to float, which is why sinking one is such a fight.

The hollow chambers and open face give a lattice of small spaces. Springtails congregate on them heavily, which makes a lotus pod a convenient way of lifting part of a culture out without digging through the soil. In an aquarium they leach tannins and tint the water, which is the point for blackwater keepers.

Beech seed cases

These are the husks, not the nuts. Each autumn a beech, Fagus sylvatica, drops its seed in a woody four-lobed case called a cupule, and once the nuts have shaken out the empty cases are what lie on the woodland floor.

The distinction matters: beech nuts contain oxalic acid and are mildly toxic in quantity, and the empty case is not the part with the problem in it. A split cupule sits as four stiff lobes half-closed over a cavity, and that cavity is scaled to a springtail rather than an adult isopod. Beech litter is high in lignin and low in nutrients, so beech seed cases persist for a long time and feed in gradually rather than turning to mush.

Magnolia pods and magnolia leaves

Two different products from the same tree, doing different jobs.

The seed pods are woody and cone-like, dense and slow to decompose, giving climbing texture and a grazing surface that lasts weeks rather than days. The large whole leaves are tough and waxy, break down far more slowly than oak or beech leaf litter, and hold their shape when damp, which makes them the best lasting hides in the range. The pale felted underside also happens to look good against dark substrate.

If you want one sentence on how to use them: magnolia leaves are the backbone of your leaf cover, topped up with faster-rotting litter for variety and actual feeding.

Lichen sticks

Worth reading our listing in full, because we took a claim off it. We used to say Ardentiella need lichen and decline without it. We went looking for the evidence and could not find any, so it went.

What is true is narrower and still interesting. Lichen is not a plant. It is a composite organism, a fungus farming a photosynthetic partner, with basidiomycete yeasts in the outer layer as a third component. It presents a surface chemically unlike anything else you would put in a tub. Put a lichen-covered stick in and the crust does thin out over a few weeks, which is our own observation. But a 2017 laboratory study found that secondary compounds in a common lichen actively deterred woodlice from feeding, which fits what keepers report: some species go straight at it, others ignore it completely.

Bark pieces

Hides, foraging surfaces and hardscape. Damp bark grows biofilm and microfauna that get grazed, and it breaks down slowly into the substrate's organic content. Beech bark is sold by weight rather than by piece, so expect a natural assortment, some of it carrying a little lichen. For longer-lasting structure, cork is the usual answer, and do I need to change the cork bark answers the question people actually ask about it.

The preparation table, which is the useful part

Here is the thing that catches people out. If you order several botanicals together, they do not all arrive in the same state, and one of them needs work before it goes anywhere near an established enclosure.

Freezing is gentler than baking if you are seeding a bioactive setup, because an oven kills the beneficial organisms along with the unwanted ones.

On boiling lotus pods: give them a good hour on a rolling boil. That figure is ours from doing it, not something published, and you should plan on weighting them down overnight regardless because an hour of boiling does not beat several million years of seed dispersal. Boiling also softens the material and deals with anything picked up in collection and storage.

Why any of this matters: unsterilised material collected outdoors is the commonest way keepers import a mite population into a clean tub. Mites and pests in isopod enclosures covers what you are trying to avoid, and it is a great deal easier to avoid than to fix.

What botanicals will not do

They are decor with a useful side, and it is worth being blunt about the limits.

They will not lift your breeding rates. They will not rescue a struggling colony. A setup without a single pod in it is not missing anything essential. Leaf litter, rotting wood and a permanent calcium source do the real work, and botanicals are what you add once those three are already right. If a colony is not thriving, the answer is in the substrate, the moisture gradient or the calcium, not in the decoration.

They are also consumables. Everything on that table above breaks down faster than cork bark does, which is the point of it, but it means topping up rather than buying once.

How to actually use them

Scatter across the substrate among the leaf litter rather than burying anything. These work where the animals can reach them, and there is no benefit to putting them under the surface.

Cluster two or three where you want the colony to congregate, and you get somewhere reliable to check on them without turning the whole tub over. That single trick is worth more than the aesthetics for anyone keeping a shy species.

Use them in both the damp end and the dry end. Different species will use them differently, and letting the animals pick tells you more about what they want than any care sheet will.

Store the spares dry and they keep indefinitely, so a pack is not a commitment to use it all at once.
