Magnolia seed pods are one of the most useful and attractive botanicals you can add to an invertebrate enclosure. These are the woody, cone-like fruiting pods of the magnolia tree, prized in the hobby as a slow-rotting source of food, cover, and grazing surface for isopods, springtails, and millipedes alike. They look the part in a bioactive setup and earn their place functionally too — a genuine multi-tasker for very little outlay.

Every batch we sell has been frozen for a minimum of 72 hours before dispatch to sterilise it. This deep-freeze step kills off any unwanted hitchhikers — mites, mould spores, and other pests — so you can add the pods straight to your enclosure with complete confidence, without risking an outbreak of something you didn't ask for.

What Are Magnolia Seed Pods Used For?

They're a true all-rounder in a bioactive enclosure. As they slowly break down, magnolia pods feed the microfauna and provide a grazing surface for the biofilm and microbes that isopods and springtails depend on. The woody structure also offers shelter and climbing texture, giving smaller animals somewhere to hide, forage, and feel secure.

Because they're dense and slow to decompose, magnolia pods last far longer than soft leaf litter, making them a low-maintenance addition that keeps working for weeks. They're equally at home in an isopod colony, a springtail culture, or a millipede enclosure.

How Do You Use Magnolia Seed Pods?

Simply place the pods on top of your substrate wherever you'd like cover or a feeding station. There's no need to bury them — your animals will graze the surface and shelter in and around the woody segments. In a humid enclosure they'll gradually soften and break down, at which point they can be left to be consumed entirely or swapped out for fresh ones.

Although we've already sterilised them by freezing, many keepers like to give botanicals a quick rinse or a brief soak in warm water before use to soften them slightly and help them sink into place — entirely optional, but it can speed up how quickly your isopods take to them.

Why Choose PostPods Magnolia Seed Pods?

Our pods are frozen for at least 72 hours to sterilise them, so they arrive clean and ready to use with no pest risk. They're an inexpensive, long-lasting way to enrich any bioactive setup, and they pair perfectly with the rest of your substrate and botanical supplies.
