Drygoods Mystery Box For Sale
- Free shipping over £65
- In stock, ready to ship
- Backordered, shipping soon
The Drygoods Mystery Box is the most cost-effective way to stock the supplies side of an isopod, springtail, millipede or bioactive setup — a curated selection of food, substrate, calcium, and décor from our Drygoods & Accessories collection at substantial value uplift. Properly distinctive from our livestock mystery boxes in that it focuses on the foundation supplies every keeper needs but rarely thinks to bundle.
The value proposition is straightforward:
- £15 box — you receive £20 of supplies (33% bonus value)
- £25 box — you receive £50 of supplies (100% bonus value — your money doubles)
In exchange for letting us choose the mix, you get substantially more for your money than buying individually. The trade-off: this is a mystery box, so you don't pick what's in it — we curate from current stock based on the value tier and what's available at the time of dispatch.
What's NOT in the Box
Worth being explicit about this up front. The Drygoods Mystery Box does not include:
- Screw-in air vents — these need to be matched to your specific enclosure size and drilling preferences, so we sell them individually rather than including in the box
- Heat packs — these are seasonal and weather-dependent shipping supplies, not setup consumables
Every other product in our accessories collection is eligible for inclusion. If you specifically need vents for your setup (and most keepers do), order them separately as part of the same purchase. The collection page covers this directly: "If you're just getting started, keep it simple: leaf litter, rotten wood, cuttlebone, and a screw-in vent or two. That's the foundation everything else builds on." Treat the mystery box as covering the food, substrate, and supplement foundation; pair with separate vent purchase for complete setup.
What's in the Box
Every box contains a curated selection from our accessories range — substrate, food, calcium, décor, and occasionally enclosure items. Categories of products typically included:
- Substrate components — Shredded Rotten Wood, Leaf Litter, Leaf Litter Substrate, Flake Soil, Bat Guano
- Protein and supplementary food — Tropical Fish Flakes, Bee Pollen, Spirulina Algae Wafers, Oak & Algae Wafers, Pond Sticks, Dried Shrimp
- Calcium sources — Cuttlebone, Crushed Oyster Shell
- Specialist food — Lichen Sticks (essential for Ardentiella, beneficial for Cubaris)
- Décor and hides — Small Cork Bark, Lotus Pods
- Enclosures — possible inclusion at the £25 tier of a Top-Opening Terrestrial Enclosure (Medium) from Exotic Enclosures, which at £28.99 alone makes the £25 box exceptional value
The species mix in any given box depends on the value tier and current stock availability. We don't pad boxes with low-quality stock — what you receive is the same products you'd find on the individual listings, just bundled together at properly substantial value.
What to expect at each tier:
- £15 (£20 value): A starter setup foundation — typically 4–6 essential items covering substrate (leaf litter or shredded rotten wood), at least one protein supplement, calcium (cuttlebone or oyster shell), and a piece of cork bark or lotus pod for décor. Properly suited as the food/substrate foundation for a new isopod or springtail enclosure.
- £25 (£50 value): A comprehensive setup bundle — typically 6–10 items covering multiple substrate components, a varied protein supplement selection, both calcium sources, lichen sticks for specialist nutrition, multiple décor pieces, and possibly the inclusion of a premium item like an acrylic enclosure or a larger substrate volume. The value uplift at this tier is properly significant — at £50 retail value for £25 paid, this is the most cost-effective way to stock a complete supplies foundation in one purchase.
Specific items in any given box depend on current stock availability — we can't guarantee any particular product will be included. If you have strong preferences for specific supplies, the individual product listings in the accessories collection are the right way to purchase those.
Why Buy a Drygoods Mystery Box
Several genuine reasons make this box worthwhile:
The new-setup starter. Setting up a first isopod, springtail, or millipede enclosure requires multiple small purchases — leaf litter, rotten wood, calcium, protein, décor. The drygoods box delivers the practical foundation in one purchase at substantial discount. Properly suited to keepers building their first bioactive setup or anyone establishing new enclosures from scratch.
Stock-up convenience. Existing keepers often run low on multiple supplies simultaneously — leaf litter gets consumed, cuttlebone needs replacing, protein flakes run out. Rather than placing multiple separate orders, a single mystery box delivers a mixed restock at properly improved value.
Discovery and variety. Each box exposes you to products you might not have selected yourself. Lichen sticks become an enthusiastic addition once you've seen Cubaris swarm them. Bee pollen turns out to support breeding in ways flake protein doesn't. The mystery box is a properly cost-effective way to broaden the supplements you regularly stock.
Cost-effective gift purchases. The £25 box at £50 retail value makes a properly compelling gift for any invertebrate keeper — substantial perceived value at an accessible price point. Pairing with one of our livestock mystery boxes (isopods, springtails) creates a complete starter package.
Acrylic enclosure upside at top tier. The £25 box has a chance to include the Exotic Enclosures Top-Opening Terrestrial Enclosure (Medium) — £28.99 retail. If your box arrives with this included, you've already exceeded the £25 paid before the rest of the contents are considered. Genuine substantial upside at the higher tier.
How to Use What You Receive
The contents of any drygoods box work together as a bioactive setup foundation. General usage:
Substrate components mix together to form the substrate base of any isopod, springtail, or millipede enclosure. Combine organic topsoil (sourced separately) with shredded rotten wood, leaf litter substrate, and flake soil for a properly nutritious mix. Top with whole leaf litter for cover and food access.
Protein supplements — fish flakes, bee pollen, dried shrimp, algae wafers — should be offered in small quantities 1–2x weekly, placed on the drier side of the enclosure to prevent spoilage. Remove uneaten food within 48 hours.
Calcium sources — cuttlebone or oyster shell — should be permanently available in the enclosure. Place pieces on the substrate surface or partially buried. Cuttlebone may need boiling for 20 minutes before use to remove residual salt; oyster shell is ready to use.
Décor pieces — cork bark, lotus pods — provide essential hiding spots, microclimates, and supplementary food. Cork bark works best when placed across a moisture gradient (part moist, part dry); lotus pods should be boiled 60 minutes before use to sterilise.
Lichen sticks — if included, place in the enclosure as both food source and natural climbing structure. Particularly important for Ardentiella species; appreciated by most Cubaris and other forest-floor isopods.
Enclosure — if a Top-Opening Terrestrial Enclosure is included, it's ready to use after peeling the protective acrylic film and assembling per the included instructions. No tools required.
Pair With Livestock
The Drygoods Mystery Box pairs naturally with our livestock mystery boxes for a complete bioactive starter. Building a setup from scratch typically involves:
- The Isopod Mystery Box for the primary cleanup crew livestock
- The Springtail Mystery Box for fine cleanup and mould control
- This Drygoods Mystery Box for substrate, food, calcium, and décor
- Separately purchased screw-in vents matched to your enclosure size
The combined purchase gives you the foundation for one or several bioactive setups at substantially better value than buying everything individually. Worth considering if you're properly building from scratch rather than just topping up an existing collection.
Realistic Expectations
You don't get to pick the contents. That's the trade-off for the value uplift — we choose the mix from current stock. If you have specific products in mind, the individual listings in the accessories collection are the right route, not the mystery box.
Vents are excluded by design. You'll need to source these separately if your enclosure setup requires them — and most do. The mystery box is structured around food, substrate, calcium, and décor; ventilation hardware is a separate purchase.
Heat packs are excluded by design. Heat packs are seasonal shipping accessories rather than setup consumables; we sell them separately and recommend adding to orders during October-March or when overnight temperatures drop below 5°C.
Stock availability shapes what you receive. The product mix in any given box depends on what's in stock at the time of dispatch. Boxes sent in different months may contain quite different selections.
The value uplift is real, not a sales gimmick. The pricing tier of each box reflects genuine retail value of the contents inside — not inflated retail prices used to make the bonus look bigger than it is. The £50 box contains £50 of accessories at our standard individual-listing prices.
The acrylic enclosure inclusion is possibility, not promise. The £28.99 Top-Opening Terrestrial Enclosure is one possible inclusion at the £25 tier, but availability varies — we can't guarantee it'll be in your specific box. If you specifically want the enclosure, purchase it directly from the listing.
You'll still need topsoil and sphagnum. The mystery box covers leaf litter, rotten wood, flake soil, and other speciality substrate components — but the topsoil base layer that most setups need isn't typically included (it's not a PostPods catalogue item). Source pesticide-free organic topsoil from a garden centre as the substrate base, then mix the mystery box substrate components on top.
Read the individual product listings once you know what arrived. The accessories collection has detailed usage information for every product we stock — well worth checking once you've opened your box and identified what's inside.
