Jupiter Isopod Care Guide (UK)

The short version: Jupiter isopods (Cubaris sp.) are one of the most forgiving cave-type Cubaris you can buy, which makes them the sensible first step into a genus with a reputation for being fussy. Keep them on a deep, wood-rich substrate with a piece of limestone, a humidity gradient running from damp to nearly dry, and steady cross-ventilation at normal room temperature. Do that and a small starter group settles in and breeds at its own unhurried pace. They are not a first-ever isopod in the way dwarf whites are, but they are close, and they reward a little patience with one of the best-looking colonies in the hobby.

I have kept isopods for around five years now, alongside two decades with reptiles and other animals before that, and if one genus makes new keepers nervous it is Cubaris. The cave species have earned a name for being slow, pricey and easy to lose. Some of that is fair. A lot of it is not, and the confusion usually comes down to people starting with the wrong species. Jupiter is where I tell them to begin.

What are Jupiter isopods?

Jupiter isopods are an undescribed Cubaris species from the limestone karst of Thailand, sold under the Jupiter trade name rather than a formal scientific one. That is normal for this group; many cave Cubaris are still waiting on proper description. What you can count on is the look. The body runs charcoal to near-black, with clean cream or pale-yellow outlining along each segment, giving the banded, planet-like appearance the name plays on. Adults reach roughly 15 to 20mm, a good visible size for the genus and noticeably bigger than dwarf types.

Like the rest of the cave group, they come from a stable, humid, calcium-rich environment: think damp limestone crevices with still-but-fresh air. Are Jupiter isopods good for beginners?

Yes, with one honest caveat. If this is the very first isopod you have ever kept, a hardy woodlouse-type species or a dwarf white will be more bombproof. But if you have kept anything before, or you are simply willing to set the enclosure up correctly from day one, Jupiter is a genuinely forgiving Cubaris. It tolerates a wider comfort band than the premium cave species, it is not as glacially slow as a Rubber Ducky, and it does not sulk if the humidity drifts for a day. The other classic on-ramp into the genus is the Panda King, and plenty of keepers run the two together as their first cave pair. Start with either and the routine you learn carries straight over to the rarer, costlier species later.

Setting up the enclosure

A well-ventilated tub of around 5 to 10 litres is plenty for a starter colony, and Cubaris actually do better with a bit of floor space than with height. The single most important element is the substrate. Build it deep, at least 6 to 8cm, so the animals can burrow and regulate themselves, and make it wood-rich rather than a bag of coco coir. My base is a mix of flake soil, white-rotted hardwood and a little organic topsoil, which holds moisture without going sour and gives them something to eat as it breaks down. Coco coir on its own holds too much water and offers nothing nutritionally.

On top of that, add a generous layer of leaf litter and a few pieces of rotten hardwood or bark. These are not decoration; they are the pantry and the cover the colony lives in. Finally, and this matters more for Cubaris than for most isopods, include a source of calcium such as a chunk of limestone or a piece of cuttlebone. Humidity, temperature and ventilation

This is the part people get wrong, so it is worth slowing down on. Jupiter isopods want high humidity, but they want it with a gradient and with airflow, not as a sealed swamp. Keep one end of the enclosure damp, around 70 to 80 percent, and let the other end sit noticeably drier, then let the animals choose. Mist the damp end when the surface starts to dry rather than soaking the whole tub.

Cross-ventilation is the safety valve. A couple of vents on opposite sides, or a mix of mesh and airholes, lets stale air move out and stops the stagnant, wet conditions that breed mould and grain mites. If you only remember one thing about cave Cubaris, make it this: stagnant wet air kills far more of them than dryness ever will. Temperature is easy in the UK. Normal room temperature, roughly 18 to 24C, suits them perfectly. They do not need a heat mat, and a mat that quietly bakes the substrate dry does more harm than good.

Feeding a Jupiter colony

Most of a Jupiter's diet is already in the enclosure. Leaf litter and rotting wood make up the bulk of what they eat, which is why a wood-rich substrate matters so much. On top of that, offer small amounts of fresh vegetables such as squash, cucumber or carrot, and remove anything that starts to mould before it takes hold. Protein should be occasional and sparing; a little fish flake or a dusting of a prepared isopod food every week or two is plenty. Overdoing protein is a common cause of mite booms in Cubaris tanks.

Breeding and growing the colony

Jupiter is a steady breeder rather than a fast one, and that is a feature, not a fault. Female isopods do not lay eggs in the open; they carry their developing young in a fluid-filled brood pouch underneath the body and release tiny white mancae that look like miniature adults. Your job is mostly to leave them alone. Resist the urge to dig through the substrate to count babies, keep the conditions stable, and let the colony build quietly.

Start with a group rather than a pair. Around 10 to 15 animals gives you a healthy spread and a far better chance of steady reproduction than a handful. Expect a slow first few months as they settle and establish, then a gradual, accelerating climb once they are comfortable. Deep substrate, consistent humidity and plenty of calcium are the three levers that speed things along.

Common mistakes to avoid

The mistakes that cost people their colonies are nearly always the same few. Sealing the tub for humidity and cutting off airflow is the big one, because it turns a healthy damp enclosure into a stagnant one within days. Letting the whole substrate dry out is the opposite error and just as damaging. Skipping calcium leads to failed moults over time. Starting with too few animals stalls the colony before it begins.
