Almost everything eye-catching in the isopod world is either big or brightly coloured; the Shiny Gator is neither, and it still stops people in their tracks. At just four to six millimetres it is a true dwarf, but every one of those millimetres is packed with character: a glossy dark body studded with raised, nub-like spikes like miniature alligator hide, set off by a bright orange-red face and rear and two pairs of dark-tipped antennae. It is one of the most distinctive small isopods you can keep, a premium Thai collector's species that looks like nothing else in a typical setup.
It is an as-yet-undescribed species, which is why it carries the loose "Isopoda sp." label and is sometimes filed under Cubaris or among the Armadillidae; taxonomy aside, it belongs to the small, prized club of "spiky" isopods alongside the pineapple-shelled Crystal Pineapple and shares that armoured, tuberculate look with its larger cousin the Ankylosaur. Despite their size these are not shy animals, but active little movers that still roll up tight when something startles them.
As a small, premium SE Asian species it wants the more careful end of Cubaris-style care rather than hardy Mediterranean conditions. Keep it warm and humid with a gradient, a damp end and a slightly drier end, misted to maintain moisture rather than soaked, with gentle cross-ventilation so the air stays fresh. A smaller, well-sealed tub holds humidity better for animals this size, and the fine detail of the enclosure matters more than its scale. Aim for warmth around 22 to 26°C and a humid gradient, and take care with ventilation gaps, since an animal only a few millimetres across needs fine mesh over the vents to stay put.
Because the animals are tiny, lean towards a finer substrate: a living base of flake soil, well-rotted hardwood and organic topsoil, not too coarse, deep enough to burrow, with plenty of calcium worked through, crushed limestone, cuttlebone or oyster shell, for clean moults on a heavily-armoured shell. Keep a plain coco-coir base out of it. Top it with a generous layer of fine magnolia and oak leaf litter and cork bark, which doubles as cover and grazing.
Feeding is easy but scaled down: leaf litter and decaying wood as the constant base, small amounts of soft veg such as courgette and squash, and an occasional trace of protein for a breeding group. Mould is the main risk in a small humid tub, so remove uneaten fresh food quickly and let a springtail culture share the enclosure to keep it in check, which pairs well with a species this size. A small, slow-starting colony is normal at first; these are not quick to get going, and the reward is a cluster of tiny armoured gators moving over the leaf litter once the group establishes.
Breeding is slow and steady, as it tends to be with rare premium isopods: a settled group given warmth, humidity and calcium will produce small broods of live miniatures over time, and patience is rewarded because established Shiny Gator stock is much sought-after. Every order is captive-bred, boxed double-walled around a ventilated tub of damp sphagnum and posted Monday to Thursday by tracked next-day Royal Mail with a live-arrival guarantee and a small overcount as standard.

Really incredible service, the day before dispatch Dan let me know he had mistaken a bag of his personal (heavily decayed) leaf litter in the freezer for a bag of fresh leaf litter, which was one of the items I had ordered. He offered to dispatch the decayed leaf litter (which is highly nutritious but not easy to supply to customers due to the time it takes to produce), substitute it for leaf litter substrate (which would usually cost more), or dispatch l the fresh leaf litter separately (or wait for it to be ready then dispatch together!) with no extra costs.
The communication was absolutely brilliant and I'd already had a high sense of trust in Postpods after much research and exploration of the site, having recommended it to a friend also who had a wonderful experience. The fast communication, number of options to correct a simple mistake, and the quality of the items (and safety of the pods! I couldn't find a single dead one and, in fact, I was sent some extras!) really solidifies why Postpods is regarded as the best in the isopod business in the UK.
I'm incredibly excited to order again and what started as choosing a cheaper seller for spiky pineapple isopods has really evolved into a lifetime loyalty & has deepened my passion for keeping invertebrates even further. Thanks Dan for providing such a lovely experience & for taking such brilliant care of your stock.
Alas I have few photos because I was so excited to dig into everything and finish setting up my enclosures that I didn't get much time to get photos, but I do have many photos of the isopods.
Third time for ordering from you I've bought powder orange isopods and dairy cow isopods and they are booming and all orders arrived all alive I wouldn't go anywhere else thank you for an easy and fast process
I got my first ever Isopods! After lots of research I chose these Magic Potions. They arrived safe and sound. All very active and of varying sizes. They have settled in well to their new home and are thriving. I also got all the needed substrate and other extras with this order. All items were perfect and well packaged. I even had a couple of little surprise extras. Thanks so much! I will definitely be ordering all my supplies and more Pods from here in the future.
Really great purchase! They all arrived alive and well and they are already multiplying. They are really gorgeous and nice to see.
I prepared my viv for these, in accordance with the detailed instructions on the website and thankyou so much for the instructions as they are all moving around and exploring the viv and some are eating already. Without those guidelines I would have killed them with too much moisture. They are interesting in a different way
