Rainbow Stag Beetle: Care Guide
The Rainbow Stag (Phalacrognathus muelleri) is the most extravagantly coloured stag beetle in the hobby and, unusually for a spectacular beetle, one of the least demanding to rear. Larvae grow out at 18 to 25°C, which an ordinary British room sits inside the year round, so there is no heat mat and no thermostat involved. Larvae are reared individually in firmly packed fermented hardwood, take four to eight months from egg to adult, and the adults then live around eighteen months on beetle jelly and soft fruit. The spelling everybody gets wrong
It is muelleri, not "mulleri". The species was named by Sir William Macleay in 1885 in honour of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, the Victorian government botanist, so the name carries his spelling. A good proportion of the hobby, and a good proportion of listings, drop the first e.
You will also see the animal sold as the King Stag Beetle, the Magnificent Stag Beetle, or Mueller's Stag Beetle. All four names refer to the same species. It is the only member of its genus, and it comes from the rainforests of northern Queensland and New Guinea, with two recognised subspecies split between those two ranges.
What it actually looks like
Adults carry a metallic iridescence that shifts through green, gold, red, blue and near-black depending on the angle and on the individual animal. Photographs rarely agree with each other for exactly that reason.
Males run from roughly 24 to 70 mm including the mandibles, which makes the largest of them the biggest stag beetles in Australia. Females are more compact at 23 to 46 mm and no less colourful.
One detail worth knowing before you start: the colours fade after death. Every specimen photograph you have seen understates the living animal, and a set beetle in a case is a poorer thing than the one walking around in front of you. That is a large part of the argument for rearing rather than collecting.
Why this one does not need a heated cupboard
Most of the spectacular beetles in the hobby arrive with a shopping list attached: heat mat, thermostat, temperature-controlled cupboard, and an eye on the electricity bill. The Rainbow Stag is the exception that makes the group approachable.
It grows out anywhere from 18 to 25°C. An ordinary heated British room sits comfortably inside that band, so a shelf in a spare room does the job that other species need equipment for. Nothing is plugged in, nothing needs a probe, and there is no failure mode where a thermostat sticks on overnight.
This is the single reason it makes a sensible first beetle, and it is worth weighing against the assumption that a striking animal must be a difficult one.
Rearing the larvae
Stag beetle larvae are saproxylic, meaning they eat dead wood, and specifically wood that fungi have already broken down. Getting the medium right is most of the job; the rest is largely waiting.
Rear each larva in its own tub. Larvae housed together will damage each other, and there is no version of communal rearing that works out cheaper once you have lost one.
Pack the tub firmly with fermented flake soil rather than leaving it loose, because a larva needs to be able to hold a tunnel. Adding pieces of white-rotted hardwood gives structure to work through and slows how quickly the medium is exhausted. Keep it evenly damp and never wet, and check every few weeks rather than every few days.
When a larva has visibly processed most of the tub, replace the bulk of the medium but return a portion of the old material with it. That carries over the gut fauna the larva depends on, and a complete change throws it away.

Why fungus does the work
Beetle grubs cannot break down lignin themselves. Wood is good food locked inside a material almost nothing digests directly, and the way round it is to let fungi open it first.
Stag beetles solve this at the point of laying. Adult females carry pockets called mycangia, found in the females of every one of twenty-two lucanid species examined, and of the five that were cultured, all held xylose-fermenting yeasts. The female seeds those into the wood as she lays, so the larva hatches into timber that has already begun to be processed for it.
That is the same logic behind the two rearing media you will see recommended. Flake soil is hardwood sawdust fermented until the lignin breaks down. Kinshi is hardwood colonised by a white-rot fungus, where the larva is feeding on the fungal tissue first and the softened wood second. Kinshi is traditionally the stag beetle option, and it is worth adding to a tub rather than treating as a complete replacement for the rearing medium.
Timeline from grub to beetle
Larvae pass through three instars, growing from something barely visible into a plump white grub with an orange head capsule. Under room-temperature rearing, egg to emerged adult typically runs four to eight months, with the pupal stage taking around a month of that.
Larger, slower-grown larvae generally produce larger adults, so there is little to gain from pushing them along. If you want a big male, patience is the technique.
Once an adult emerges it needs roughly three months of maturation before it is ready to breed, and it will often stay hidden in its chamber for that period. Resist the urge to dig it out. After that, adults live around eighteen months, which is generous for a stag beetle and a large part of why the species is so well regarded.
Keeping the adults
Adults do not eat wood. They take beetle jelly or soft fruit, and they are docile enough to handle gently despite the mandibles.
A ventilated enclosure with a deep layer of substrate, cork bark and branches to climb, and a shallow food dish covers the requirements. A forest-floor substrate works as a base layer, topped with leaves for cover.
Two practical warnings. The first is that they fly, so the lid needs to fasten and the enclosure is worth opening indoors with the door shut and nothing spinning overhead. That is how a beetle actually gets lost. The second is mould: seeding the enclosure with springtails keeps it off uneaten jelly and leftover fruit without bothering the beetle.
If you intend to breed, a female needs a deep, firmly packed layer of the same fermented medium the larvae grow in, plus a decaying log to lay into.
Who this suits
Rearing larvae is a slower, quieter project than keeping adult animals, and it suits people who like the process as much as the result. There is very little daily work: check the moisture, change the medium when it is spent, wait. What arrives at the end is an animal most people have only seen in photographs.
It makes a good first beetle precisely because the temperature requirement is so forgiving. And if you already keep isopods or millipedes, the husbandry will feel familiar, because it is the same rotting-wood logic driving all three.
