Keeping Beetle Larvae: From Grub to Adult Beetle
Buy a beetle and you usually buy a beetle. Buy a stag or flower beetle and what arrives is a fat white grub in a tub of dark crumbly substrate, and it will stay a grub for most of the time you own it. The adult is the short, spectacular end of a life that is mostly spent underground, eating wood.
That catches people out, because almost every care sheet online describes the adult. This one covers the part you will actually be doing: getting a larva through to emergence without losing it.
L1, L2 and L3, and which to buy
Beetle larvae grow through three stages, called instars, moulting between each. Sellers list them as L1, L2 and L3, and the number tells you how far through the larval life the animal already is.
L1 is a freshly hatched grub. Cheapest, longest wait, and the highest risk, because a small larva has the least margin if conditions are wrong. L2 is the middle ground and a sensible first purchase. L3 is the final and largest instar, closest to pupation, and the quickest route to seeing an adult, though you get the least of the growth phase for your money and less influence over the size of the beetle that emerges.

Substrate is the whole hobby
A beetle larva eats its bedding. Everything else is secondary, and the quality of what you give it decides how big the adult ends up.
Wood is hard to eat: the cellulose in it is good food but it is locked inside lignin, which almost nothing digests directly. In a forest, fungi unlock it slowly over years. Fermented flake soil does the same job deliberately and fast, by fermenting hardwood sawdust with a carbohydrate source and microorganisms until the lignin breaks down and the cellulose is left accessible. It is the standard rearing medium for stag and flower beetle larvae, and it is what the Japanese breeding scene developed for growing record-sized animals.
Flower beetle larvae will also take well-decayed leaf litter. Stag and rhinoceros larvae want white-rotted hardwood or flake soil, because they are wood feeders in a way flower beetles are not. Some breeders also use kinshi, hardwood colonised with oyster mushroom mycelium, which is the same principle again: let a fungus do the unlocking before the larva has to.
Avoid pine and anything coconut-based. Softwood resins and coir are not food and will not support growth, whatever the bag says about being a reptile substrate.
Container size, by instar
Too small a container limits the adult. A larva that runs out of food or room simply pupates early and small, and you cannot get that size back afterwards.
As a rough guide, working up as the animal grows: around 100ml for an L1, 200ml for an L2, 500ml for an early L3, and a litre for a late L3. For Rainbow Stags specifically, published guidance ranges from roughly 500ml up to a litre for the biggest males, so 800ml is a sensible middle for a late L3 and erring large costs you nothing. Depth matters more than floor area, because a larva lives down inside the substrate column, not across its surface, and it needs depth to build a chamber near the base when the time comes.
Changing the substrate without setting the larva back
You will know it is time when the tub fills with frass, the compacted faecal pellets a larva leaves behind. The substrate loses volume, darkens, and stops looking like food.
The mistake is replacing all of it. A larva relies on gut microflora it picked up from the medium, and a complete change can shock its digestion. Keep back a quarter to a third of the old substrate and mix it through the new, so the culture it depends on comes with it.
Temperature
Match the origin. Lowland tropical species generally want 20 to 25°C. Highland species want 15 to 20°C and will suffer if kept as warm as their lowland relatives.
The Rainbow Stag is unusually convenient here. It grows out at 18 to 25°C, which most heated British homes hold anyway, so it needs no dedicated warm cupboard and no thermostat.
The pupal cell, and the one rule that matters
When a mature L3 is ready, it stops eating and builds a chamber: an oval cell of compacted substrate bound with liquefied faecal matter, usually low in the container and against a wall where you may be able to see it. Inside that cell the larva shortens, goes still, and pupates.
From the moment the cell appears, leave the container alone. Do not dig, do not tip it out to look, do not pick the tub up to show someone. The cell is fragile and the animal inside it cannot repair a broken one. This is the single commonest way keepers lose a beetle they have fed for six months, and it happens at the last possible moment.
Expect roughly a month as a pupa, longer in the larger species. After emerging, the adult often stays in the cell for several more weeks while its shell hardens and its colour develops. It will come up when it is ready.
How long the whole thing takes
For a Rainbow Stag, egg to adult runs somewhere between four and ten months depending on which source you follow and how warm the larva is kept, with roughly four weeks in the egg and about a month as a pupa. Flower beetles are quicker, often a few months rather than most of a year. Once out, a Rainbow Stag adult typically lives twelve to eighteen months, and some keepers report longer. That is a long adult life by beetle standards and a good part of why the species is worth the wait.
What actually goes wrong
Disturbing the pupal cell. Covered above, and worth repeating because it is the big one.
A container that is too small. Produces a live but disappointing adult, and the cause is invisible until emergence.
Substrate that is not really food. Coir, pine, or fresh untreated sawdust will keep a larva alive for a while and it will not grow.
Letting it dry out. Flake soil should hold together when squeezed and not drip. Dry substrate stops being digestible long before the larva shows any sign of trouble.
Over-handling. A larva is a soft animal with a thin cuticle. Lift it with a spoon rather than fingers, and only when you are changing substrate.
Frequently asked questions
What does L1, L2 or L3 mean when buying larvae?
They are the three larval instars. L1 is newly hatched, L2 is mid-development, and L3 is the final and largest stage before pupation. Buying L3 gets you an adult sooner; buying L1 or L2 gives you more of the growth phase and more influence over the final size.
Can I keep beetle larvae together?
For flower beetles, usually yes, and communal tubs are normal. For stag and rhinoceros larvae, house them individually. They will damage each other in a shared container, and the damage tends to be discovered too late.
My larva has stopped eating and gone still. Is it dying?
Far more often it is pupating. A mature larva stops feeding, empties its gut, shortens and becomes inactive while it builds and occupies its cell. Leave it alone and give it a couple of months before you worry.
Do I need a heat mat?
For a Rainbow Stag in a normally heated UK home, no. For genuinely tropical lowland species you may, but heat the room or the shelf rather than the container, because a mat under a tub creates a hot floor a larva cannot escape.
Why did my beetle emerge smaller than expected?
Almost always the larval stage rather than anything that happened afterwards. Too small a container, substrate that was not nutritious enough, or a larva that ran short of food and pupated early. Adult size is set before emergence and cannot be improved later.
