What Is Kinshi? Beetle Substrate Explained (UK Guide)
Walk into any serious beetle breeder's room in Japan and you will see shelves of bottles filled with what looks like pale, dense sawdust. That is kinshi, and for stag and rhinoceros beetle keepers it is the difference between adequate larvae and exceptional ones. The word is Japanese for mycelium, and the material is exactly that: hardwood sawdust colonised by a white-rot fungus until the block holds more fungal tissue than timber. What Kinshi Actually Is
A kinshi block starts as hardwood sawdust, usually oak or beech. A white-rot fungus is introduced and allowed to run through the whole mass, and as it grows it does something beetle grubs cannot do for themselves: it breaks down lignin, the tough structural polymer that locks up the nutrition in wood. White-rot fungi take apart both lignin and cellulose, which is what turns indigestible timber into food.
Here is the part most descriptions get backwards: a larva burrowing through kinshi is feeding on the fungus first and the softened wood second. The fungal tissue itself is the meal. That distinction has actually been tested - larvae have been reared successfully on artificial diets made of fungal tissue and nothing else, and when researchers split freeze-dried mycelium into its soluble and insoluble fractions, each improved growth against the control, though neither alone matched whole mycelium.
Nature worked this out long before breeders did. Adult female stag beetles carry small pockets called mycangia - found in the females of every one of twenty-two lucanid species examined - and the ones that have been cultured held xylose-fermenting yeasts, which the females seed into the wood when they lay. The beetle brings its own fungal starter culture to the timber. Kinshi is simply the keeper's version of the same trick, done thoroughly and in advance.
Kinshi Bottles vs Dried Kinshi: The Honest Difference
The Japanese product is a live, refrigerated block with a shelf life measured in months, and larvae are reared inside it - the grub goes into the bottle and eats its way through the living culture. Live kinshi bottles are difficult to get hold of in the UK, and what is available here, including our own kinshi, is supplied dried.
Worth being straight about what that changes. Dried kinshi is a food you add, not a medium you rear in, and any listing that tells you otherwise about dried material is overselling it. What drying removes is the living, spreading culture; what it keeps is the fungal protein, and the freeze-dried research above shows dead mycelium still feeds larvae well. Treat it as a concentrated protein and nutrition boost for a rearing substrate you build yourself, rather than a substitute for the whole Japanese bottle system.
One more honest note on ours: it is made with lion's mane, Hericium erinaceus, a white-rot fungus of beech and oak, so the mechanism above holds for it. It is not one of the species Japanese breeders traditionally use - those are the oyster mushrooms and turkey tail - so treat it as the same mechanism by a different fungus.
How to Use It for Beetle Larvae
Rehydrate the dried material until it holds together when squeezed without dripping, then either work it into the rearing substrate or lay it on the surface where larvae will find it, refreshing as it goes. The base bed it improves is the standard larval mix: flake soil with hardwood leaf litter and crumbling rotten wood worked through it. Flake soil and rotten wood are doing a similar job to kinshi by a different route - fermentation and natural decay rather than deliberate fungal culture - and the three together cover the spread of what a growing grub wants.

Not Just Beetles: Isopods and Millipedes
Anything that eats decaying wood will take kinshi. For wood-feeding isopods and millipedes, break it into pieces and mix it through the substrate or scatter it over the surface, then leave the animals to work at it in their own time. There is no rehydration ceremony needed for them - the humid enclosure does that work - and a colony will graze a piece down gradually the way it does white-rotted wood, with the bonus that the fungal protein content is far higher than plain timber.
Storage
Keep the unused portion dry and sealed and it will not spoil. That is the practical advantage of the dried form: a live bottle is racing its own shelf life in your fridge, while a dried pack sits in the cupboard until the day you need it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is kinshi a complete substrate on its own?
The live Japanese bottles are - larvae are reared entirely inside them. Dried kinshi is not: it is a food and enrichment you add to a proper rearing bed of flake soil, leaf litter and rotten wood, not a medium to rear in by itself.
Does drying ruin it?
No. Drying ends the living culture, so the block will not keep colonising fresh wood, but the fungal protein remains, and research on freeze-dried mycelium shows dead fungal tissue still improves larval growth. You lose the living bottle system; you keep the nutrition.
What is the difference between kinshi and flake soil?
Both start as hardwood and end as food a grub can digest, by different routes. Flake soil is sawdust broken down by fermentation; kinshi is sawdust broken down by a deliberately cultured white-rot fungus, and the fungal tissue itself is a large part of the meal. They complement each other rather than compete - a flake soil bed with kinshi through it is closer to the ideal than either alone.
Which animals benefit most?
Stag and rhinoceros beetle larvae are the classic customers, and the ones the Japanese bottle system was built for. Wood-feeding isopods and millipedes take it readily too. Fruit chafer grubs, which lean more on decayed leaf and flake soil than on solid wood, accept it as an enrichment rather than needing it.
Can I culture my own kinshi from it?
Not from a dried pack - the fungus in it is no longer alive. Growing your own means starting a live white-rot culture on sterilised hardwood sawdust, which is proper mushroom-cultivation territory: doable, but a different hobby with its own learning curve.
