Not every showpiece isopod has to be a tropical rarity. The Darth Vader is our dark-toned line of Armadillidium germanicum, a large, hardy Central European pillbug, and the name earns itself the moment one rolls up: a big, dark, glossy sphere that really does read as a certain helmet. It gives you drama and presence on an animal that keeps at ordinary room temperature. Every colony we send is captive-bred here in the UK.
The base species is a well-documented one, Armadillidium germanicum, described by Verhoeff in 1901. A nice quirk sits in the name: although germanicum means "German", the type locality is actually Italy, and the species ranges across Italy, Austria and Germany, so it is Central European rather than strictly German. 'Darth Vader' is our own trade name for stock selected at the darker end of the species' natural colour range, applied to real visual character rather than invented, much as "Magic Potion" names a particular A. vulgare morph. Compare it across the Armadillidium range.
A substantial Armadillidium; published sources put the species around 13 to 22 mm, and our stock runs at the larger end, so these have real presence next to A. vulgare 'Big Italy' or A. werneri. The species is naturally variable, from pale grey-metallic to deep charcoal, and this line is selected for the dark, near-black, glossy individuals, so expect some variation across a colony rather than uniform jet black. Startled, it draws into the tight, complete sphere every Armadillidium is known for, and in a dark animal that rolled ball is the whole point of the name.
At medium difficulty the germanicum is more forgiving than some of the fussier Mediterranean species, but it rewards steady conditions. Aim for 21 to 27°C, comfortable within a normal UK home, and 65 to 75% humidity on a gradient: one damp side with sphagnum and leaf litter, the rest slightly drier, since it dislikes both a waterlogged tub and an arid one. Give a deep, moisture-retentive substrate of organic topsoil, flake soil and rotting hardwood rather than coco coir, with plenty of cork and bark for the under-stone shelter it favours. Supplement calcium generously and never copper: isopods take all the trace copper they need from a varied diet, and added copper is genuinely toxic to them. Our calcium guide has the detail.
An unfussy detritivore: a constant base of mixed hardwood leaf litter and rotting wood, vegetable once or twice a week, the occasional soft fruit, and protein such as fish flake or dried shrimp for the breeding females. Keep multiple calcium sources going for that substantial, well-calcified shell, and lift uneaten fresh food within a couple of days. A springtail culture keeps mould down around the damp corner.
The germanicum breeds reliably once a colony settles, in moderate broods rather than a flood, with young reaching maturity in roughly four to five months. A well-established group of six months or more is far more productive than a freshly set-up one, so give it warmth, steady humidity, good calcium and plenty of cover for gravid females, and let it get on with it undisturbed.
The Darth Vader suits the keeper ready for a large, dramatic flagship Armadillidium, the collector building a Central European cluster, and, yes, anyone who will enjoy the helmet gag every time the colony rolls up. Try an easier morph like Magic Potion or the bright Clown first if you are new to the genus. It is not for anyone after vivid colour, or an isopod that does not roll.
Every colony is captive-bred from established UK stock and ships under our live arrival guarantee, in a ventilated deli tub with damp sphagnum inside a double-walled box. We dispatch Monday to Thursday by Royal Mail next day before 1pm, with a 20% overcount included.

Third time for ordering from you I've bought powder orange isopods and dairy cow isopods and they are booming and all orders arrived all alive I wouldn't go anywhere else thank you for an easy and fast process
I got my first ever Isopods! After lots of research I chose these Magic Potions. They arrived safe and sound. All very active and of varying sizes. They have settled in well to their new home and are thriving. I also got all the needed substrate and other extras with this order. All items were perfect and well packaged. I even had a couple of little surprise extras. Thanks so much! I will definitely be ordering all my supplies and more Pods from here in the future.
Really great purchase! They all arrived alive and well and they are already multiplying. They are really gorgeous and nice to see.
I prepared my viv for these, in accordance with the detailed instructions on the website and thankyou so much for the instructions as they are all moving around and exploring the viv and some are eating already. Without those guidelines I would have killed them with too much moisture. They are interesting in a different way
Exactly what I was looking for! Nicely packaged and a good variety of of thickness of sticks.
Been great to use in some of my over invert enclosures aswell
