Premium 15mm algae wafers enriched with Spirulina platensis, a dense, long-lasting food that isopods, millipedes, and cockroaches love to gather around and graze on over time.

Algae wafers are a brilliant addition to any invert enclosure. Unlike flakes that break down quickly, these solid 15mm discs hold their shape and soften gradually in a damp enclosure, giving your colony something to congregate around and feed on over a longer period. They carry 5% crude fibre, and the spirulina brings vitamins and minerals of its own.

Why Algae Wafers?

  • Spirulina platensis (min. 6%): a protein-rich blue-green alga that provides natural vitamins and minerals
  • 34% crude protein, solid protein content in a plant-heavy formula
  • 5% crude fibre, with 6% crude fat alongside the protein
  • Rich vitamin profile: vitamins A, D3, E, and C in generous quantities
  • 15mm wafer format, holds together well in the enclosure, softens gradually as it takes up moisture, and gives your inverts something to cluster around
  • Great for leaving in as a slow-release food source between regular feedings

How to Use

Place one or two wafers on a piece of bark or a small dish and leave them dry. They'll take up moisture and soften over time, and your inverts will graze on them; wetting them first makes them mould sooner. Replace any uneaten wafers after a couple of days. Works well as part of a varied diet alongside leaf litter, flakes, pond sticks, vegetables, and other protein sources.

Our article on feeding isopods algae pellets covers this kind of spirulina-rich food in detail, from breaking pieces up for small mouths to clearing leftovers before they mould. The oak and algae wafers add oak bark for wood-eating species, and the pleco wafers carry more protein; the three are different answers to the same slow-release feeding.

The slow-release format makes these particularly handy for isopods, millipedes, and cockroaches: leave a wafer in and your colony will graze on it for a couple of days. Browse our full accessories collection for the other components of a varied invert diet.

For the Aquarium

Algae wafers started as a food for plecos and other bottom-feeding fish, and they still suit them, along with freshwater shrimp and snails: a wafer that sinks and holds together overnight is what a nocturnal grazer needs. Our guide to what to feed bottom feeders and shrimp covers how much to give and when. The rest of our aquarium foods sit on foods for reptiles, turtles and fish.

Size

100g of 15mm wafers. One disc left in will feed a colony for a couple of days, so the pack empties slowly even with several tubs on the go.
