There is a particular pleasure in opening a box before you know what is inside. That is the idea behind the Isopod Mystery Box: a hand-picked mix of live isopods that you do not get to choose, put together from whatever is healthy and thriving in our cultures on the day it is packed. Isopods are terrestrial members of the suborder Oniscidea, the same land crustaceans most people know as woodlice, and the hobby around them reaches far beyond the grey ones under your garden slabs.

Rather than a fixed, pre-set assortment, each box is drawn from our current live stock, so the selection shifts with the seasons and with whichever colonies are doing well at the time. One box might lean towards hardy, fast-breeding workhorses that make a reliable cleanup crew; another might fold in something slower and showier. I put the combinations together by hand rather than scooping at random, so the animals tend to suit one another and give you a real spread of the hobby rather than three near-identical species.

Think of it as a lucky dip for building a collection. It is a relaxed, good-value way to try species you might never have picked off a list, and plenty of keepers find a new favourite this way. If you are starting out, it also answers the where-do-I-begin question: instead of agonising over your first two or three species, you get a curated handful to compare side by side and learn what you enjoy.

Because a mix can span beginner and more advanced species, I keep the care notes light here and let each animal's own page carry the detail. As a rule, most isopods are content at normal room temperature, roughly 18 to 24°C, in an enclosure with a damp end and a drier end so they can choose their comfort. Give them a base of leaf litter and a little decaying hardwood to graze on, some cuttlefish bone or another calcium source, and gentle ventilation that freshens the air without drying it out. A small culture of springtails alongside them earns its keep, clearing mould and the microscopic mess isopods leave behind. For anything more specific, the full isopod range lists individual care species by species.

The boxes are a surprise, though not a blind one. When you order, you are welcome to note your experience level, the species you already keep so I can avoid doubling up, the kind of setup you are stocking, and anything you would rather not receive. I cannot promise particular species, and would not want to, since that rather defeats the point, but I will work with what you tell me and choose to suit your situation.

Everything travels as livestock: double-boxed and insulated with moisture control, a heat pack through the colder months, and a live-arrival guarantee behind every order. I post early in the week so your isopods arrive mid-week rather than sitting in a depot over the weekend.

Common questions

How many species will I get? It varies with the box and with current stock, so I will not pin a number to it. Every box is a mix rather than a single species, chosen to give you a real spread to work with.

Can I request specific species? You can leave preferences and exclusions and I will do my best within current stock, but the surprise is the whole point, so no one species is guaranteed.

Is it a good choice for a beginner? Yes. It is one of the gentler ways to start, since you get several species to compare at once and can find your feet without committing to a large single-species order.

If a small surprise landing on your doorstep appeals, this is it. And if you would rather choose exactly what you keep, you can always pick individual species and pair them with a box for a bit of both.
