Shiro Utsuri Isopods (Nesodillo sp.)

I borrowed the name for these straight from the koi pond. Among koi keepers, a Shiro Utsuri is a black fish broken up with clean white markings, and the moment you see Nesodillo sp. 'Shiro Utsuri' the reference makes sense. This is a Taiwanese isopod dressed in bold, high-contrast black and white, the sort of patterning that reads clearly from across a room rather than needing a hand lens to appreciate. It is one of the boldest black-and-white isopods around.

Fully grown, they sit at around 15 to 20 mm, big enough to actually watch the markings shift as they move. No two are quite alike. Some individuals carry heavy black patches over a white base, others lean paler, so a settled colony gives you a spread of patterns rather than one repeated design. They are active and out on the surface, not secretive, so the markings are easy to enjoy. Like the rest of their family they conglobate, rolling into a tight ball when startled, and the contrast stays visible even on the curled body.

What I like about recommending them is that the drama does not come with fuss. They are hardy, forgiving of small mistakes, and settle into a new enclosure quickly, which is why I point beginners towards them so often. They are also reasonably prolific, with adults reaching breeding age at roughly six to eight months and broods a good size, so a colony builds steadily and keeps going for the two to three years these isopods tend to live.

Coming from subtropical Taiwan, they want more warmth and moisture than the Mediterranean species. I keep mine around 22 to 26°C, which most UK rooms hold year-round, though a cold, unheated room over winter is worth avoiding. Set the enclosure up with a humid gradient rather than a uniformly wet box: dampen one end well and leave the far end drier, so the animals can choose their comfort. Good cross-ventilation keeps the air fresh and holds off mould.

Underneath, give them a living substrate they can dig into and feed from, 5 to 8 cm deep for burrowing and steady humidity. I build mine on a moisture-retentive base with flake soil for nutrition, a constant source of calcium from cuttlebone or crushed shell for healthy moults, and a generous covering of leaf litter and decaying hardwood. A layer of magnolia leaf litter doubles as food and cover. Keep it moist but never waterlogged. As undemanding detritivores they graze on the litter and wood, and I add the odd piece of carrot or courgette plus a little protein each week.

If you are weighing up monochrome isopods, these sit in a useful spot. Zebra isopods give you clean stripes and drier Mediterranean care, while Shiro Utsuri offer bolder, patchier markings and a tropical humidity profile. Panda King Cubaris deliver a similar black-and-white punch but ask for more careful keeping, and Snow White go the other way with a pure pale look.
